Homebuying questions??

How do you decide where to look for houses? I know based on what you can afford but we live in Queens and we want to look in LI (nassau). I don't know about schools or taxes. Where do I start?

Well, you can ask all of us! But you can also look online and view the school report cards and when you look at a property you should be told the taxes (though with some info. from the real estate agent you can call the county and get the exact amount). What are you looking for in a town, besides good schools?

We are looking for a town tha isn't too far from Queens as my husband works there and I would need something near the LIRR. I weould also like some property, not too much as I know that relects your taxes but I would like to be able to have some property.

go on line, newsday has reports on school districts, neighborhood reports etc

Msli.com also has info

Most people usually pick an area based on schools, location etc

I know I posted this question awhile ago on the NW board and then someone again posted the same exact question very recently on the Newlywed board (withing the last month or less). I think there was a lot of advice on the most recent thread. If you have some time, you may want to check that out.

Like you I was a Queens person looking to move to Nassau and had no idea where to look or what towns were like.

A lot of it depends on price as well. You may want to determine a price range that you can afford and then see what areas are within your range. Based on that I would then compare school district, travel time and what you're getting for your money. Some towns may add on an extra 10-15 minutes to your commute, but you might get a bigger house.

Set a price range (a real one) and see what towns have that range. Then narrow it down.
