What would you do if you found something that is potentially valuable in your new home. Something like a piece of jewlery that was probably declared lost by the previous owner?
ETA: The previous owner is deceased

In my case, the previous owners were not very nice people nor do I have a forwarding address. So I would probably be keeping it.

If they were deceased...nothing! Keep it, sell it, or give it away.
If they were still alive and I knew how to get in touch, I might contact them.

I say hang onto to it! The first time something goes wrong in the house you purchased from them, you can declare it 'even stevens'!!!

I'd want to hock it, take the money, and run. But what I'd probably do is contact the real estate agent who represented them, ask for a contact #, call and if they can describe the item, I'd give it back. Though really, once you take ownership of the home, what is left in it is legally yours. (I think...)

Hmmm, if it was something that might have sentimental value to the family of the deceased (like a ring or some sort of heirloom), I would probably try to contact a relative. If it was just money or a non sentimental item, heck I'd keep it!
