Hospital Ques: How far away is too far?

Hospital Ques: How far away is too far?

All my Dr's are at NYU Medical Center. We recently moved to Kings Park and I'm wondering if I should find an ob/gyn practice on LI so that when my time comes I will be closer to a hospital out here.

Do you think traveling from Kings Park to NYU Medical Center would be too far when going into labor? Its about an hour and thirty minute drive.

ETA: I'm not pregnant - just making plans!

Where are the dr. offices? If they are in the city, that may be inconvenient due to the fact that you have to make so many trips there while pregnant (especially at the end)...But I had the same dilemna (sort of) - my dr. is also with NYU, and I live in Brooklyn. I could not give up my dr., so I stuck with her, but I am only about 25-30 minutes away...
Who is your dr.?

Been having this *discussion* with DH - been going to my same Dr for 15 years in Rockville Center and we live in Fort Salonga/Northport and he's already said I am crazy if I think we'll be driving all the way west and south while I'm in labor!!!!

However my friend who also uses the same doc has done it twice and she lives in Greenlawn.

G - the city is a bit much though!

The only real concern would be if you any difficulties and needed to go to the dr or hospital more often. That happened to me and believe me driving 45 minutes (in no traffic) to the hospital for a 30 minute test 2X a week got very difficult on me and DH.
Also, if you were feeling a weird pain or nervous about something you cannot just 'run over for a quick check'...and if you do go into labor at say...4pm on a Monday..then you could have REAL problems getting to the hospital.

I am concerned about that myself. I heard Lawrence in Bronxville/Eastchester is a great place to deliver babies but I want a dr. that is experienced with treating patients with gastroenterology (sp) problems and I don't know if any are affiliated with Lawrence. I think Columbia Presbyterian has a great ob/gyn dept but Lawrence is closer to me by a few minutes. But Columbia is on the way to work so that is conveinant.

Ugh don't know what to do.

I think that it may be too far. Not to be scary but pregnancies dont always go as planned so you want a reasonably close doc just in case.
