How far in advance did you guys or are you guys planning to book the block of rooms at the hotel for your guests. And is there a general rule of thumb as to how many rooms to block off? We have 200 people on our guest list...think we probably will wind up having 150 actually attend. But I also know that aside from out of town guests (which there are PLENTY)...that our local friends normally decide to get rooms too so they dont have to drink and drive that night and the shuttle will provide transportation.
Help! We are getting married in 9 months and we havent booked the hotel yet...is that bad??

Re: Hotel Blocks
My wedding is next April, and we did our block 2 weeks ago.
We checked out a bunch of hotels, even stayed in a few to see what the rooms were like, and when we finally decided on a hotel, we went to the sales manager and gave her our info.
They said the minimum block is 10 rooms, and the maximum hold is 50. We only really need about 20, and she said if we block that off, we get a complimentary night in the bridal suite and vouchers for free breakfast the morning after. They offered free unlimited shuttle service to the RH and back to the hotel.
The best part about it, is that we are not financially responsible for any rooms not blocked.

Re: Hotel Blocks
I booked my hotel block about 2 months ago and my wedding is May 2011. We blocked off 25 rooms and we are not going to be held resposible for any of these rooms if they are not booked (which is very important)! I'm not sure if there was a max number of rooms we were allowed to block off. We just estimated how many people we thought were going to stay in the hotel and were told that we could always add more rooms to the block if they get booked. I don't think it's bad that you don't have your hotel block yet, I just wanted to do them ahead of time because I'm going to send the hotel information along with my STDs.

Re: Hotel Blocks
I am the day before you and did my block last year. I wanted to send out the info with my save the dates. 90% of our guests are from out of town so i wanted to give them enough time to plan and pay.
We blocked 25 rooms and assumed out in town guests will not be using the hotel. We can always add to the block if we have to

Re: Hotel Blocks
I blocked some rooms this week. I was told that the minimum block is 10 rooms. A few of the places said I had to guarantee 60% of the rooms will be used (so I didn't go with those hotels). Also, make sure the hotel you choose has a shuttle. The hotel we picked is charging us for the use of the shuttle, other places it might be free.

My rooms are blocked for Aug 2011. I just did it to get it over with. Most hotels dont let you choose how many to block. My hotel opens the block to hold 15 rooms and then once those get booked, they will open another 15. They can't hold open like 50 rooms and then 10 get booked. So don't worry how many you have to hold open.

Re: Hotel Blocks
Our wedding is also in january and we blocked our rooms off in jan of this year...honestly, although we did it a year in advance, no one has booked their rooms yet. Plus, that weekend shouldn't be a problem i dont think. We are not responsible for ANY of the rooms if they dont get booked which is awesome! guests have until 30 days prior to the wedding to book with the discounted rate. I think you are still fine on time if you block rooms off soon. We just did ours early since we wanted to send info out in stds.

Re: Hotel Blocks
I wll be blocking our rooms at the end of May. I would have blocked them sooner but our hotel only allows rooms to be blocked 50 weeks in advance so I am doing it literally 50 weeks in advance to the day LOL. We will also be sending out our STDs at that time as well.
