I just got engaged and I'm thinking about wedding dates. For those of you who did both in the same year, was it really hard?
We want to buy a house this winter and get married between Aug-Nov. of '08. My parents will pay for the reception and we'll pay for everything else. I don't know if it'll be too hard to do both.
I don't want to wait until summer of 2009 but I could if I had to, of course.
Any advice? Thanks ladies!
p.s. we don't have a tremendous amount to put down on a house, probably 20-30,000.

Re: house and wedding in the same year?
we did it in the span of a year... it is very difficult and also being that we are paying for the whole wedding... its alot! basically you need to figure out your bills for the house.. and if you can do it in your budget then its do-able!! but my advice to you is... make sure you have extra money incase of something breaking in the house.. its very important!!

Re: house and wedding in the same year?
We closed on our house one month before the wedding. Our families gave us our wedding gifts early so we had money for the down payment. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to afford it.

the amount you are putting down is relative to how much you are looking to spend. $30k is 10% if you're looking at $300k houses so you're okay there.
but just dont forget about closing costs which in NY state can be upwards of $13k-$20k depending on many factors such as tax escrow, sale price, fees, etc.
its definitely doable, you should get preapproved first to get a realistic amount that you can afford. FM if you have questions.

thats another big point... the closing costs are soooo expensive.. i would def see what you will get preapproved for.

Re: house and wedding in the same year?
Our lease is up 1 month before our wedding, and we do NOT wanna renew and waste more $$ on rent. We are starting to look at houses any day now, so we are hoping to be in our house by May 1, with our wedding being June 6. Wish us luck. lol
I have friends who did this, and it worked out for them. There was lotsa scrimping and saving and scurrying for closing cost $ at the last minute, but they made it work.
So good luck to you.

My wedding date is actually 1 year since we closed on our house. If your family is paying for the wedding i say go for it! It's stressful but also look at it as fun, and then once you are married you will be so happy to go back to your home as husband and wife!

We will have to wait on the house since we are having the wedding. For us, it is too stressful to do both. You should work out a realistic budget to see what is possible for you. Being in debt is NOT fun.

I think it is manageable...I hope...we set our date for 09 because we are planning on buying a house this summer but just in case we didn't find anything we wanted to give ourselves some time... but I think you can do both.

Re: house and wedding in the same year?
We bought our house in August and we are getting married in January.....
It's a lot financially and also emotionally. There is a lot of stress that goes into buying a house, the inspections, closing, etc... Plus, once you have it, you want to spend all your money fixing it up but you need to be saving for the wedding.
