House hunting is overwhelming

Original post by BellaEyes

It would not be so overwhelming if the taxes were not so high. We just started looking.. we are looking in Babylon, Babylon Village, and even started looking out east in Kings PArk, Commack.. Realisticly, do you HAVE to have 10-20% for a down payment? Of course having that would make the mortgage payments less but.. those who are in the same boat as I am please give some advice.. It's quite depressing.

I am hearing from a few realtors that the market is supposed to hit bottom soon. I hope so b.c this is absolutely ridiculous.

Doubt it! I just looked at a ranch in Hauppauge last week just to see and it was $540,000! Not to mention it is still a sellers market!! We just lost a house to someone who paid full asking price for the home!!!

Thank God! We aren't in a rush, but we miss eachother sooooooooooooooo much and are dying to live together. I keep doing searches on LI home lotteries-nothing now and also There are breaks for new home owners, but I have to do more research, I'll keep you girls posted. If we didn't have family here we would move out of state, but almost our entires families live here and we would miss them too much.

Yes they appear to be but the houses are still overpriced so they seem to be dropping a lot

Original asking for my house was $449 - we paid $372 and got a $1K credit back at closing for minor repairs

definitely NOT a sellers market!

But what did comps go for in the area at the time you bought your house? They house we just put a bid on was priced at $580,000 when it first went on the market, but sold at $499,999. Comps in the area are between $475,000 and $490,000. Sellers were aware of that and priced high to think that the home was dropping in price.

What about Sayville, Holbrook or Oakdale?
When me and DH buy a house, my top 2 pics are Oakdale and Sayville! Those houses are breath taking! [most of them!]

I agree with checking out Sayville! We bought our house here in April and couldn't be happier. The neighborhood is wonderful, the town is clean, downtown is filled with great shops, amazing restaurants and so many activities. It has that really great small town fee. And a PHENOMENAL school district!

We wouldn't even mind a fixer-upper. My brother's Fil's are an archiect, engineer, and my FSIL works for a mortage company-we would be paying hardly anything for closing costs-and a RIDICULOUSLY low interest rate-but still-it's nearly impossible.

Cool, my hubby is an architect.. wish he could build us a house right now LOL

Well, hopefully it will remain a buyers market nd the prices of the houses will keep dropping.

Mine will be an architect soon! We are looking for the fixer uppers. DH was a contractor (his family is contractors and architects) we need a bomb to fix! lol but i wish we could build a ouse now,..but in the meantime we just design the dream house for fun!
