Re: house-hunting poll

DH and I knew we wouldn't have the $$$ to do renovations, so we wanted a house that had as many updates as possible.

It really depended on how much TLC a house needed. We saw some that had wallpaper from the 70s all over and bathrooms from that era, so we didn't want to deal with them, but we saw some whose kitchen cabinets weren't updated but the appliances were, so that was acceptable to us.

It's up to you, but whatever house you go after, make sure it says 'This is for us.' If you don't, you're settling and I wouldn't suggest that b/c you won't be happy.

it is so hard to try and decide that for someone else. when you go into a house, you have to look around and see if its acceptable to you. we are willing to do work, but not completely gutting the house. we will refinish floors, paint, take off wallpaper, get new appliances, etc, if the price is right. It all depends on so many factors. They always say though that the most important thing is that it has 'good bones.' and 'location, location, location.'

oh, i know every couple had to decide for themselves. it was just that since we're looking to have make this decision, i was just wondering what others are doing/would do.

house-hunting is such a strange experience, and i've only been doing it for a few days

Re: house-hunting poll

we were looking at a bunch of houses in a certain price range and everything we looked at needed a ton of work. Finally, the agent took us to a house that was more money that we planned on spending, BUT needed NO work- just whatever we wanted to do-painting for example- It was in a GREAT shape- 6 years old- the owners were elderly and barely were there- they stayed with their children- I dont think the stove was ever used! Really...

We saw larger houses in areas that were not as nice- and the houses needed some work-

Our house is a bit smaller than we planned on- still 3 bedrooms though- but needed NO work, so we chose it! The minor difference in cost was almost nothing once you break it down- it was worth it-plus the area is so nice!

(we also do not plan on staying here forever- this was a 'starter house' We had a condo as well, and it needed everything done- We tore up the kitchen, bathroom, carpets, it needed everything- and we didnt want to deal with that again, esp. in a larger house)

I want something I can gut and make my own. But that's only because FH's family owns a contracting company.

Feel free to post questions as things come up during your search. Many of us are going thru these things or can help you out with answers, so don't hesitate to ask!

We're not at this point yet, but hope to be come the summer when my raise kicks in. However I wouldn't buy a house unless I walked around and could see & feel myself living there. I'm very handy so minor work isn't a big deal, but I wouldn't buy anything that had to be gutted.

We are not afraid to buy a house that needs renovations. We would prefer a fixer upper that has room for expansion, in order to get a lower price. DH, my brother, FIL and BIL are all very handy.

I say the small crumby cottage with lots of land!! Potential to be anything!

Privacy, trees, oh and taxes

Re: house-hunting poll

When DH and I were looking, we started to feel like we were never gonna find anything within our price range. It was very frustrating! But, we kept telling overselves to NEVER SETTLE!!! Buying a house is a big decision and a LOT of money, so you and your DH should not settle for something. If you love the house that needs TLC and you can see how you and your DH can make it your own, then go with that one! If you love the smaller house that needs no work, then go with that one. If you don't love either of them, keep looking! When we found our house, we knew it was the house as soon as we walked in. Although our house is small and it needed some TLC, it is still ours! We love it!

GOOD LUCK!!!

we went for something larger that needed TLC - it didnt need a lot of work, just some sprucing.

and im glad I made that decision, because we would have grown out of a smaller house quickly, and buying and selling houses is a PITA!
