Okay, so months ago I said to Mom I want beautiful green houseplants as cp at the wedding for three reasons- 1 - I love green and thats my bm dress color-most likely 2- I thought it would be pretty and 3 - people can take them home and put them in their living room for years to come. At the time mom was like eeeehhh nooo thats dumb but then we watched martha steward wedding dvds and she had house plants as cps!!! so mom was like maybe.. and I was really sleepy at that time so I would have to watch again to see exactly how martha did it and what kind of plant it was.. anyway, its not like its much cheaper than cp -a nice houseplant can be like 45 $ - but it will live longer.. also i was thinking orchids- but they dont live that long-i think i read 2 years and are supposedly hard to care for?? also like 45$ at hicks ..
what do u ladies think of house plants? even house plants with flowers i would like.. something beautiful, green, some flowers, that will live longer than a week ..
any suggestions??

Re: house plant centerpieces
i was debating and still am doing potted orchids or some other plant. i like the fact that it'll actually live and be useful after the wedding.

I think it's a nice idea. One that flowers would be ideal. I just received a mailing at work and it included a square green clay pot filled with various herbs. It smells really nice (there's definitely some mint in there) and looks cool, too.

I did this for my e-party & everyone loved it!!! Orchids live FOREVER, I knew a lady that had a 40 year old orchid (it was enormous!!!) and they're really not hard to care for. They thrive on neglect. I took an orchid home from my eparty, so did my mom & FH's mom and two cousins, and they're all thriving and huge now!!! I love the idea!

Re: house plant centerpieces
August could be a little difficult to get potted flowering houseplants.
I'd go with potted orchids. Dress up the pots with tulle and ribbon, and make sure there is spanish moss covering the soil. Add votive candles around the base. You can use a different orchid at every table if you want to mix up the colors a bit.
I'd go to a large nursery like Hicks around August of this year, since your wedding is next Augr, to see what is available as a flowering houseplant.
Kalanchoe is also an option. Comes in various colors too. Living baskets with various types of small houseplants in them - thee are many 'green' plants that have differnt color leaves. An array of african violets clustered around a pillar candle - since they are inexpensive, maybe enough that each guest can take one home.

I love the idea, I may do that myself. Go for it. There is places in the city that sell wholesale flowers/plants. I believe they are around Broadway b/w 26-31st. I am not 100% sure, but do a search and you should find something. Good luck!

Wholesale flower district is on 6th avenue around 26th- 27th street. Not too many wholesalers left.
