House search

Opinions/thoughts on the following areas:

Lynbrook *** I would love to know more about this area. Anyone from here? Very interested.
New Hyde Park
Oceanside
Mineola
Great Neck

We want to stay in Queens or move to Western Nassau. Thanks in advance. Can't wait to really get into the house search, though I'm worried and feel like I don't know anything about this!

Re: House search

My girlfriend lives in Lynbrook now and she loves it. We also have family that live in New Hyde Park and have heard no complaints about over there either. The other days I'm not too sure out because I'm from out east and FH is from Babylon. HTH!

I'm from Floral Park (the Nassau side) and I'm about 2 blocks from NHP. FP is a small town where everyone knows your business. I call that TV Land but NHP I think is bigger and nicer. I would get a house in NHP and we'll probably look there. It's 20-30 from the beach, the city, and 15 from the mall. PLUS the train station is more convienent.

Thanks. I'm a little familiar with the areas, but not completely. I grew up in Massapequa, and FH and I live in Queens. We want to be close to the Queens border for family.

Lynbrook has a lot of werid laws right, like no parking on the street between certain times? I mean we are used to alternate sides in Queens, so I guess it's not that big of a deal.

new hyde park- very nice imo, no like 'town' street if youre looking for something like that but its nice, and mid-priced. there is a queens side and a nassau side. youll pay much much less taxes in queens side and to me, its the same but obviusly school district will be different however new hyde park is still in the top rated sc for public schools in queens.

great neck- extremely pricey, much much higher than the other towns. like im talking could be millions, they have some stuff for less now, but its still hard to find anything for under 600K or more. great neck does have some nice coops though which are in line with the price range of other towns. it has more of a town feel because it has little shops and things like that and part of s middle neck road has a town like feel, always crowded though...right by the lirr. great schools.

mineola- mineola imo is like new hyde park. nice, down to earth, a little further south than new hyde park and definately great neck. i think the schools are average. i probally know the least about this town but i would live here for sure based on what ive seen.

anyway- im in real estate so if you have any questions that might come up, let me know and ill try to answer them

oceanside- my friend lives there with her dh in a condo. they love it, i think. very close to the beach (dont have rights but...) they go to the town i think its long beach a lot in the summer. i dont know anything though really personally and know nothing about schools. i do know however that the town gets loads of flooding and in the latest rain storms they were without power for days and days because of so much flooding

Thank you soo much. I know the Queens side of Floral Park is so much cheaper in taxes! I have no problem living in Queens- we do now. I didnt realize NHP had a queens part too. Do you know the streets that border the Queens part?

What do you suggest we do first? Ive just been looking at prices and houses online. Want to start looking at open houses.

Thanks again :)

Re: House search

new hyde park is a nice town. my aunt, uncle, and cousins live there and i know they really like it. i would just be careful and buy a house that's not in the village of nhp. if you live in the village, you can't park on the street overnight, it's not a big deal if you have a driveway. they also have some other weird rules.

the schools in nhp are good too. I subbed there for 2 years and always liked the parents and the children. I work in NHP over the summer, at the school districts summer program, so i'm pretty familiar with the area.

most of my family lives in lynbrook and my FH is from there too. its a nice town, with good schools (district 20)... its a really convenient commute to the city. the only thing is that you pay village tax on top of your regular tax.

We are looking in some of the same areas! Here is what I know/have learned:

Lynbrook: FH works there, his family business is based there. I love the area surrounding, its very convenient to the city, and the market in Lynbrook seems to be really great for buyers right now, but from what I have seen/gathered, some parts of it are better than others. Example, FH's business is in an area that is mixed residential/commercial, so I would try to make sure you stick in the more fully residential areas.

Great Neck: My new job is in Little Neck, right on the Queens side of Great Neck. Gorgeous, but very expensive!

Oceanside: this is one of my top choices! Soo pretty, young family friendly, good market right now too!

Mineola and New Hyde Park I don't know so well. Hope that helps!!
