Mother kills her three children and said 'God told her to do it'

Attorney: Woman thought God told her to kill sons
Texas mother uses insanity defense at trial

(CNN) -- In opening statements Monday, a Texas prosecutor described how a mother smashed the head of her infant son with a rock and then led her two older boys outside and did the same to them, killing the two oldest boys.

Deanna Laney, 39, has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of sons Joshua, 8, and Luke, 6, and a single count of injury to a child, Aaron, her 15-month-old who survived the attack.

The prosecution's first witness in the Tyler, Texas, trial was the 911 operator who identified the tape of Laney's dispassionate call saying that she had killed her boys with a rock.

Laney sat through opening statements with her head bowed, crying softly. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors have chosen not to seek the death penalty in the case.

Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham told jurors it was their task to determine if Laney was insane or if the prosecution had proved that she knew what she was doing when she bludgeoned the heads of her three sons.

Aaron survived the attack on May 9, 2003 -- Mother's Day -- with critical injuries.

'His vision is impaired, and he will never be self-sufficient,' Bingham said. 'At best he will always be dependent on someone else.

'The last thing that Joshua and Luke Laney ever saw on this Earth was their Mama holding a rock over her head,' he said. 'And the last thing they felt was that rock crashing down on them.'

After killing Joshua and Luke, Bingham said, Laney telephoned 911, telling the operator, 'I just killed my boys. I don't think I did right by Aaron.'

When the 911 tape was played in court, Laney closed her eyes and began crying again as she heard the operator try to keep her on the line until sheriff's deputies arrived. Her husband -- Keith Laney, who has been supportive of his wife -- sat two rows behind the defense table, his head in his hands as the tape was played.

Laney's court-appointed attorney, F.R. 'Buck' Files, presented his case for an insanity defense during his opening statement.

'You will hear that she was a sick person on a quest to be closer to her Lord,' Files said. 'The only explanation which any of the witnesses can offer for her conduct ... is that Deanna Laney was legally insane.'

Files said Laney believed that God had told her the world was going to end and 'she had to get her house in order,' which included killing her children.

'The dilemma she faced is a terrible one for a mother,' Files said. 'Does she follow what she believes to be God's will, or does she turn her back on God?'

Files said he would present witnesses who would corroborate Laney's love of her children as well as her belief 'that the word of God was infallible.'

'It destroyed her ability to discern the wrongness of her act,' he said.

If the jury were to agree with the defense, Laney would immediately go into maximum security for evaluation at a state psychiatric hospital, where she could stay as long as the maximum sentence she would receive if she were convicted -- 40 years.

The jury will not be permitted to hear and consider that information.

That is so sad.

Makes me wonder.

I mean if I believed in God that much that His Word was infalible (sp) that all he says is true and to be followed. I would believe in ***** and that ***** could by default (good/evil) act like God to confuse me.

And if I thought God said I should put my house in 'order' I don't think killing my children would top the list. Maybe getting them to a church but killing them???

Maybe that's just me.

I agree with you, but that is because we are not insane. Or at least, not yet

If she really believes that God told her to kill her children, then I'm sure she believes God will help her deal with the consequences, i.e. a lifetime in jail.

OOOOOOOOOOOOH
That gets me on a whole new twist!

If she believes that God told her to do this and God is always right then she has nothing to fear for she has not sinned. She has not broken a commandment of 'Thou shalt not kill' Because she was only doing as she was told and should have no fear and feel no guilt.

But she sure is acting like she's sorry and fears jail isn't she? I would too if I just killed my two oldest children, and left the third handicapped because 'God said so' In TEXAS?!?!?!? I can see THAT going over well in the jailhouses.

Heck women correctional facilities there are FAMOUS for 'finding God/Christ' can you imagine her walking in and daying 'Im not searching, I found him, I don't need his forgiveness, because I was doing his will.'

*shakes her head*

I agree with the second part. She's got an illness alright. Anyone who would kill their children is definately not well. They atty's are not seeking the death penalty and frankly that works for me. Allow her to live and suffer.

If she's truly mentally ill (just at that moment) well then there's really nothing to do about it is there? Spend your whole life knowing you killed your own children because you lost it for a moment (uhmm excuse me but talk about torture?)

If she just cracked and is now feel guilty for it and wants to use the insanity as an out to save her life (which is now, afterall, saved) then can you imagine that? Selfishly trying to use the 'system' to prevent the death you probably know you deserve for killing your own children?

Im sorry but I find pity for them because either way people like this who kill their own will spend time (rest of their natural life or prison term until death) knowing.. it was THEM who killed their loved ones. No one to blame but themselves. Talk about burden.

Still, frankly I don't want in my society the type of person willing to kill her offspring at an off moment. Take them far far away.

Either way, this 'ooops did I do that?' stuff just rubs me the wrong way, if that makes sense. Its right up there 'Its not my fault, I did it because I was abused as a child'. JMHO

Hmm, here is what I was thinking... and it's a bit off the subject...

It’s was totally OK for a woman like that to have kids… In the meantime abortions are frowned upon because, let’s face it, they go against the religion of majority of the population of this country.

At least people who want to get one are making that decision because they realize that they will not be fit parents at the time.

This woman was the 'model citizen' she DID’T have an abortion... Perhaps she should have had three...

I know I am rumbling on, but do you see my point?

So she should have killed her children before they were born, rather than after?

I see your point.

I used to phrase it as 'Some people shouldnt be allowed to breed'

But oddly enough we can't restrict who can be parents once they are but there are people who try to restrict who make the decision of having children to begin with. If that makes sense?

I am not really sure she is considered a model citizen because she didn't have an abortion I think people who use abortion as a form a birth control is frowned upon. I m surprised no one saw this women sinking ?? I mean there has to be some sign that was seen. If not I hope this women understands that her actions were reprehensible and i think she deserves all she gets. I mean if her faith was as strong as she says it is then she should know Killing is wrong regardless who told ya !

Yes, that is exactly what puzzles me the most!

There are woman out there who just go on to kill their kids because 'god' told them to... surely there were signs of her instability that nobody paid attention to...

In the meantime, some believe that a woman who makes a conscious decision not to become a mother even though she became impregnated is a murderer!

That is possible. Maybe it's a really extreme case of post partum depression, and she can get NOW behind her, to pay for her defense, like Andrea Yates.
