How is everyone going about this? We are about to set up a joint checking account. Are you having any ATM cards? Joint Savings too, or separate? How did you figure out how much each of you should put away/spend each week?

Re: How are you handling $$$ after your married?
We have set up joint checking & savings accounts. We have also invested in mutual funds & stocks together but will also keep separate mutual funds & stocks accounts that we had before we were married.

Jpint everything, plus our separate accounts. Maintain some sort of independence, even if it just has a few bucks in it.
The way we handle it is I'm in charge fo the mula. I tel him how much he needs to give me every paycheck, he gives it. Life is Grand

We have joint accounts but he still has his original account, which I send his 'allowance' to every week. If he goes over his allowance (which does happen often) I give him more. I feel that this is the easiest way to keep track.

We have joint checking and savings. The $ I had in mutual funds stays in my name. We may use that to buy a house- if we do, I will make sure it is noted that it was used in some sort of documentation. I handle all the money going into and out of the house.

Re: How are you handling $$$ after your married?
When we first moved in together, we created a joint checking account and we agreed that we would each put in the amount of the rent, so that rent and all bills could be paid with extra left over for household expenses. We each maintained our individual bank accounts for our individual expenses (credit cards). It has worked really well so far. After we get married, we might combine everything, I'm not sure yet.

We set up a joint account after the engagement party to deposit our gift checks and also as a place to save our money for the wedding. We each contribute what we can to it.
But we are maintaining separate accounts as well. I want to maintain my independance a little. I also feel better having my own stash.

Re: How are you handling $$$ after your married?
We have been living together for 3 years and about a year into it we opened a joint checking and savings account and our checks get directly deposited into the accounts. I still have my own checking but that's because My check gets directly deposited to that account and the accounting Dept. at work are idiots and they would screw it up if I changed it.
All our money gets combined and we pay everything from that. We don't say okay you need to put x amount of dollars into the account or you pay this and I'll pay that. It just really works out great for us. I am in charge of the finances ( as my FH says ' He is an accountant till he comes home') and take care of what gets paid when and how much goes into our savings.
We just thought if we are getting married we are becoming one then why would we make things separate? I've had friends that did it separate and I never understood it. I know one friend didn't think her husband was responsible enough and i had another friend who borrowed money from her husband to go back to school...I thought that was really strange!! I could never see myself asking my husband to borrow money. Guess what half of it is mine anyway!! LOL

Joint accounts for paying bills and for saving for house, etc.
I am a firm believer in having an account of your own. That is what I plan to do.

Re: How are you handling $$$ after your married?
I just had an arguement about this with my FH the other day. We already have a joint checking and savings, I also have my own checking and savings and he has hhis own. I was planning on keeping my own checking and savings as well as the joint accounts. He assumed that I would just have the joint accounts and have my paychecks directly deposited into our joint account. I will still contribute to our joint accounts, but I still want my own as well. He seems to think that when you get married you only have a joint account. I need to have my own savings as well. Anyone feel the same way or is it just me?

Re: How are you handling $$$ after your married?
Just some advice...it's a good idea to have your own account as well. Reason being, and I know none of us want to think about this, if something happens to one of you, I believe credit card companies can go after your money to pay off the other's debt, if you have a joint account. I could be wrong on this but someone told me that's why they have their own account. After the wedding we're going to open our own accounts as well just in case. Of course the money will still be shared and we will deposit an equal amount into each account, but it's just in case something happens.

Re: How are you handling $$$ after your married?
right now we have joint checking. we each put in a fixed amount of our paychecks, he puts in more b/c he makes more (for now). i think we're going to open a joint savings too, once we move to ny.
i also have my own checking account down here in va which is where the rest of my paycheck goes. then i have also have my own savings and checking at a bank in ny. i do this b/c i'm terrible at saving money and if it is farther away (and no atm card) i tend to forget about the money i have sitting up there. i use it pay off student loans, which is nice b/c then i feel like i'm not losing any money. and every so often i send some more up there.
he also has his own checking account, and i think a savings too.
i know it's weird but it seems to work really well for us. we like having our seperate accounts so that if i want to go buy some really extravagant shoes or something i can do it without feeling guilty b/c it's from my account. and we also thought of the angle of something happening to one of us.
wow that was long, sorry!

We will keep our separate accounts. We share expenses evenly whether its dinner, vacation, or the mortgage. However, he always keeps a lot of money in his account, but doesn't track it. That would drive me crazy. He also likes to set his bills up to be directly paid from his account because he doesn't like to have to remember to write the checks. I prefer to pay bills by check. We just have different ideas about how to handle money. It works well for us.
