My FSIL lost her father this morning after a very difficult struggle with cancer. She and my brother are getting married in July, and when she's ready to start thinking about planning again I'd like to have some ideas for her to be able to honor her dad. They were extremely close so I know she's going to want him included.
For their favors they are thinking of donating to Livestrong and giving everyone a bracelet.
I did a search on here and LIF but came up with nothing.
Thank you very much. Cathy

Re: How are you planning to honor a deceased parent?
I am leaving the first seat in the first row empty with a rose....and a possible pic. ( for my mom) I will also have a pic and a memory candle on our table.

My FIL past away. and we did a memorial candle.. The candle was lit at the church during the ceremony and then lit again behind our table at the reception.

We did a donation to a charity in memory of our respective fathers, had a section in the program, and had memory candles.

MY FH lost his mother... we are having a memorial candle which will be lit at Mass and will also be brought to the reception and will be left lit on the cake table. We are also putting her name in the program as well as presenting flowers to Mary at the Mass in her memory...

That is what I did... I don't have a good picture of it but if you look closely you can see...
I loved having him walk me down the aisle.

Re: How are you planning to honor a deceased parent?
My DH didn't want to mention his father's absence publicly during our ceremony. We listed his name in the program, but my DH didn't feel comfortable doing a memory candle or anything like that.
BUT... what really meant a LOT to him and me was when I pulled out his dad's jewelry that his mom gave me to hold onto and delicately asked him if he wanted to wear something of his dad's on the day of the wedding. We quietly sifted through the jewelry and he picked out his dad's cuff links and chain with the St. Anthony's medal on it, thanked me for thinking of it and wore them on our wedding day. It was a quiet tribute, but it meant so much to us - and to his mom when we told her.
Maybe you can suggest her 'something old' or 'something borrowed' be something that belonged to her dad? That, if she wants, along with a dedication at the ceremony. But I would say to just be careful not to have something publie that's TOO upsetting to her on her day... I'm sure her dad wouldn't want her to cry her eyes out on her happy day, especially when he IS still with her. And a rose on a chair might depress too many people... I really liked that idea for my then-FH's dad and my grandmother and my mom told me not to do that... that it would bring too many people down and 'kill her' thinking of her mom (my grandmother) not there instead of focusing on the happiness. Does that make sense?

My DH also used my father's wedding band. I love that he is wearing his band.

Two ways, a table will be set up w/flowers,candles and their pictures (his Grandmother and an uncle who raised me) and we are also making a donation in their memory instead of giving out favors and are selecting a poem with a verse that will be put in frames on the tables with a brief, yet poet explanation

Re: How are you planning to honor a deceased parent?
I had a picture of my father in my bouquet and his name was the only mention in our program on a page by itself. The touches were very subtle. My father would not have wanted it any other way. He was a quiet and subtle man:
ETA: My father passed 6 months before the wedding just before we were to order our invitations. We decided that we would have the invitation worded with my mother as the host but written out as Mrs. Dad's first and last name to honor him.

I put a picture in my bo-q, it came out really nice and it wasn't over the top, so I knew it was there, but not everybody else did

I am having my fathers initials in my boo-k. We also order silver angel wing pins. I wrote a poem about my dad and how I would like everyone to wear the wings for the day to remind us that he is always with us.
