I have this area rug that I was going to have professionally cleaned. But they want to charge me $150. That is way too much. What is the best product for me to use to clean it myself. There aren't any stains. It was just in the same room as the cat's liter pan and it grosses me out.

Re: How can I really clean an area rug?
If it is small enough you can put it in the washing machine.

Depending on the type of rug (needlepoint, aubusson, etc.) or if it's of high value, you might want to have it professionally cleaned. I don't think $150 is that unreasonable.
If you're willing to risk it, I would get the spray can of 409 Carpet Cleaner and test that out on a small spot. I believe you can just spray the whole carpet, let it set, then vacuum it up.

rent a steam cleaner from home depot. we did this for all of our rugs and they came out beautiful.

At home depot there is a caprt and upholstery cleaner made by Miliken, it is AMAZING. You spray the soiled area, leave it fo 3 min, and then press each spot until it is dry,. you use a white cloth and you can actually see the dirt that was removed. By husband is a floor layer and his company swears by this cleaner.
Careful with steam cleaners, you need to make sure the rug COMPLETELY dries or it will become even dirtier since it will attract dirt, it also breeds mildew, my daughter has allergies and her doctor recommended NEVER using a steam cleaner since the steam cleaner can cause increased allergens.

Thanks for all of the advice. I vacuumed in the rug thoroughly and used some cleaning powder. Problem solved.
