How can i tactfully let my landlord know that they are loud?

I'm looking for a nice way to tell them that when they walk on their wooden floors with shoes on, they wake us up. we hear them m-f at night, weekend mornings and last night, they must have had company come back after they went out b/c we heard them at 1:30 in the morning. they are respectful people, but I can't understand why they do this. and the woman is like a hamster...she has so much energy that she will walk back and forth 80 times in a row!!! how can i nicely let them know about this?

My friend has a similar problem but she is the one upstairs. I don't think there is anything you can do. What is the woman supposed to stop walking around? Its one thing if she is verbally loud, but she isn't. It sounds like she is just behaving normally. You could say something, but I doubt if it will make a difference.

i have the same problem. upstairs the whole house is wooden floors. we don't say anything about during the week b/c whatever we'll deal, but weekends are the only time i get to sleep, so a few weeks ago they woke us up at 7:45am on sunday and that was enoguh for me. i tactfully asked her if there was anyway they could keep their kids (2&7) quiter a little bit later, at least until 9:30am. well, she flipped and wrote me a two page note ripping me and my husband a part and is still loud as ever. i can't wait until we can find a house!!!

it is the fact that they have wood floors and are wearing shoes. hearing high heel shoes on wood floors above my head at 1:30 am when I am paying about a thousand dollars a month isn't my idea of a good ngihts sleep when i have to wake up at 5:15 everyday. and she walks back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back and forth!!! at our last apartment, the ownsers kids would bounce a ball above our bedroom at ten at night.

Trust me I know its annoying. But wearing shoes isn't an offense even if she is making noise. You really have no recourse because she is the landlord, she can make as much noise as she wants. Sorry. It sux.

I totally sympathize with you!! Our landlords, their three small kids, and two dogs live downstairs from us and they are very loud. We've come to the conclusion that we just have to deal with it until we get a house. Our rent is pretty cheap so we just remind ourselves of that when we get frustrated.

I'm totally with you to. My landlord ripped up all their carpets and all I hear is the walking back/forth, part of their phone conversations and then there's the 2 kids running constantly....URRRRRRRRR!

It's not bad and they are good landlords, so I can't complain.

our landlords are great too. for instance, we got home tonight and there were christmas lights up and they extended over to our entrance. how cool is that? however, i don't want to be woken up at 8 am on a saturday when i wake up soooo early the other days of the week.

We're going to rent the downstairs floor of our house and I know this is going to be an issue too. We have hardwood floors upstairs and you can definitely hear people from the downstairs living room and bedroom. But the fact of the matter is, there's nothing we can do about it. We have area rugs and that cuts down the noise a little, but that's about all we can do. DH and I worked very hard to remove all the old carpeting and fix up our woods floors. It's a sticky situation, because we don't want to be pests to our tenants, but I'm not going to lay down carpet again. Fortunately for our tenants- we both tend to sleep late on the weekends so early morning shouldn't be a problem. But we do entertain a bit, so late nights may become an issue. I guess we'll see how it goes.

ETS- Given that I know the noise is an issue, I'm pretty sure your landlord does too. So, unfortunately I don't think you would accomplish anything by mentioning it to them.

I just saw this post and what perfect timing! Except my noise issue with my landlords is not footsteps, its MUSIC.

I live upstairs, and occasionally they have parties, but they're always on a week night. They work most weekends so I guess they have weekdays off, however I don't. I wake up early, go to the gym, then work, and frankly I need sleep and go to bed at a reasonable hour. 3 times now this has happened (and they only moved in a little over a month ago) and the bass vibrates my bed, the floor, my apt! It is beyond annoying and I think very rude. Not only that, they shout and blast the music in the kitchen right below my bedroom.

Do I have a right to call them and ask them to tone it down? Weekends, fine, but not a work night. One Monday night they kept me up until 4AM.

What would you do?

My Dh and I must be push overs coz our tenant complained that we walk to loud on the floor so now we take our shoes off when we get home.

I think you should definitely say something. I wouldn't say anything about footsteps, but loud music at 4 am is just rude!
