I got my appraisal in Macy's (which sounds reputable) but it's only 1/2 a page long!
Granted, it's a solitare, but still....
How long was your report and can you say what it includes?
I don't think we have a post like this yet and this will insure that all our reports include all relevant info.
Here's the info from mine: 1. One sentence describing general setting and # of diamonds.
Setting description: total weight of item manufacturing technique condition setting technique (# prongs) metal content gold market
Diamond Grading Report: shape and cut approx measurements actual weight table % depth % clarity color polish proportions symmetry long wave flourescence comments
...Add your info to the list....

Re: How DETAILED was your e-ring appraisal?
I don't have my appraisal with me, but it was at least 5 pages long and included both a close-up picture of the ring as well as a 'blueprint' of the diamond itself in case anyone ever tried to switch it. There was also a page listing the qualifications of the appraiser--she's testified as an expert witness in a number of trials, etc. If you're interested, I went to Jewelry Judge in Mineola on Old Country Rd.

By blueprint, do you mean the same pic as in the GIA Report (or others) with the specific inclusions, etc?

Re: How DETAILED was your e-ring appraisal?
I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but the appraiser actually took a printout of a round diamond (the shape of what I have) and using her microscope, she made specific marks on the paper as to where there were inclusions or other identifying marks in the diamond. Since my e-ring is an antique, there were a few of them. Hope this helps!

Re: How DETAILED was your e-ring appraisal?
Having worked in the jewelry/watch industry for years and being a gemologist I can tell you exactly what you need:
A) Cover letter detailing what type of appraisal you had, for an enagement ring this page would state insurance appraisal with a retail replacement price based on the average selling prices in the NY metropolitan area.
B) Page with Appraisers own description of the ring ie, setting style, number of diamonds their carat weight, combined carat weight, color and clarity grades.
C) Diamond Data sheet- detail of the center diamond ie color grade, dimensions, clarity grade, cut, shape, grade of cut, polish and symetry. AKA blueprint
D) photo of the e ring
E) If you have a certificate from an independent lab the appraiser will use that info

That's the same thing.
I have a solitaire, so the report should be shorter since they need to describe only 1 diamond.
I'll call them and aske to include the GIA Report # in the appraisal - that's a good idea.
Besides that, is there any actual stone description that I am missing that will prevent me from getting a good replacement? For those with the 5 page reports, can you please be more specific so that I know what to get them to add? So far all the information mentioned I also have in my appraisal.

I have a solitaire as well and my report is several pages long.
there are several pictures of the stone with pictures of the setting and the designer's inscription close up
there is a description of the ring, 6 prong setting, diamond cut, carat weight, color and clarity grade as well as a map of the ring and where the prongs are located
there is a 'blueprint' of the ring with markings noted so I know why it's a VS2
I used David & Toby at Just appraisers www.justappraisers.com

Re: How DETAILED was your e-ring appraisal?
I just received mine in the mail and it was very detailed and about 5-6 pages long in a report cover. He also gave us an additional copy to send to the ins.co. so we didn't have to do it.
FYI - Consultant Appraisal Services, Inc, Edward Lewand 516.429.2622. He met us at Stadtmuller Jeweler in Sayville.
