I am curious how each of you handled this situation.

Re: How did you chose godparents?
Well I happen to have a twin (for those that dont already know ! ) So thats the easiest decision in the world. No thought process involved ! and since she chose my husband who wasnt even my fiance at the time. to baptize her first child with me, I was SOOO honored that she chose him (and he hadnt even put that ring on my finger!) that of course I chose her hubby also.
My next children, there will be some thought involved. MUST be Someone very close to me and DH Someone sincere, honest and true Someone who will see my children often Someone who will acknowledge and appreciate and INDULGE in the role of Godparent
ITs really a personal decision. John and I were the only 'couple' to baptize my sisters kids. For the other kids she did 'one from her side and one from his side'. I think thats what I will do for the rest too. Sis and I are just an exception to the rule for everything we do

Re: How did you chose godparents?
My sister and I are very close. So that was an automatic given. I told my DH he could choose the godfather. He asked if I would mind if he chose his step-father. l thought that was a great idea. So now my son has his 2 grandpa's and a Papa John. My step-father-in-law was completely honored and I have no regrets at all about our decision.

Re: How did you chose godparents?
hard decision...esp since we are having a sort of interfaith ceremony for Julianne. we both wanted robs sis & hubby as godparents because we felt they would raise our daughter accding 2 our wishes should anything happen 2 us...but since this is an interfaith ceremony...only one godparent could b jewish.
after a LOT of soul searching, I chose my bro. foe those who remember he has not been a very reliable or responsible person in the past. The 2 things that I personally feel is important for a godparent 2b...but he has undergone a lot of GOOD changes in his life recently...and has 'been there' since I was preg...and now that J is here...he has been around. He was very honored that we chose him....now I hope this further spur him on to growing up some more!!!

Re: How did you chose godparents?
Well I know who the godmother will be, but I don't know yet about the godfather. I had told my sister that since she wasn't my MOH, she would be the godmother to my first child -- which to me is more of an honor, not to diminish the role of MOH, but a godmother is for life.
As for the godfather, I asked Joe if he wants to ask his cousin or if we should do the 'couple' thing and have my BIL. In my family, it's always one from my side and one from your side. But I'm thinking ahead of myself and anticipating if we're blessed with another baby, then we could have his cousin and my cousin, who are like siblings to us.
Off on tangents do I go.... bottom line is this -- you should pick somebody who is very close to you, is responsible and who you think will still be a part of your life and your baby's life 25 years from now. That's one of the 'couple' issues I have -- you never know and I know too many people who's children don't see their godparents because of divorce or no longer friends or whatever.
Ok, I'll be quiet now!!!

This is presently a major brawl in my house, so I will remain silent until it is resolved. Check back with me in about 8.5 months!

Re: How did you chose godparents?
I have only 1 sister so that was a no-brainer. My DH has 2 sisters and 6 brothers, so there is plenty of family to choose from. We have chosen the brother he is closest to for this baby. We've already spoken about how if we are blessed with a second baby it would be another brother he is close to and my SIL because we are tight with them and feel very close to them.
I agree with the others that it should be a decision based on closeness and relationship with the child.

Re: How did you chose godparents?
Remember ONE thing. You can NEVER change who their Godparents are!!
I picked my younger brother for 2 reasons. He was the ONLY one in my family who was happy for me. (John & I were off & on when I got pregnant) He told me congrats & that I was going to be a great mom. (I grew up in a VERY Irish Catholic house)
Second- He was the only one of my siblings that wasn't a God father for one of my sisters kids. SO I told him when I have a child you will be the Godfather & I stuck to my word!
The Godmother is Johns sister who told me the day I met her. That she was promised Godmother. So I let her be. I regret that one. She's a pain in the ass. Thank God she lives in Ireland so I don't have to see her so much. And she kills me because she signs everything 'Godmother Mary' She is 2 much!

Re: How did you chose godparents?
I'm not pg yet, but we have decided to pick my middle brother and his wife. Even though I only have one sister, I'm extremely close with my brother and he has done more for me than anyone else in my life (besides my parents). I couldn't think of anyone else that would be a better choice and thankfully Bob agrees because he's very close to them too. If we are blessed with a second child, it'll most likely be my sister and her husband. Bob doesn't really care because he's not on speaking terms with his only brother and he has no other relative that is close to him on his side

Re: How did you chose godparents?
Is anyone or has anyone not had their children baptized but chose godparents anyway? DH and I are interfaith and we are not planning on baptizing, however, I like the idea of having godparents, and having a blessing of some sort is what I have in mind. Any suggestions?

Re: How did you chose godparents?
You can have a blessing at a non-demonation church Nina. You should begin to look into that now. Phlys had a blessing for her child in the RC Catholic and she is an interfaith couple. You can ask her the details.
