How did you chose your OB/GYN?
While I am not TTC just yet I would like to start finding the right doctor. I was just curious how you all 'picked' your doctors and hospitals to give birth in.

I was going to ask my friends.
After I moved to LI from Brooklyn, I kept going to my dr. in Brooklyn for a while because I loved him! Then I started thinking about when I got pregnant I would want to be closer to home, so I asked my SIL and tried hers first and I LOVE him! The office is great and he is very easy to talk to. Now that DH goes with me to appointments he too thinks he's a really nice guy. It's always good to get a recommendation from someone you know and then try it out to see if it works for you...
I chose my Midwife based on her views. I was looking for a midwife who has the same opinions and beliefs about pregnancy and childbirth as I do. I got lucky that she accepts my insurance, which is how I found her. After learning about midwives, I don't want a OB/GYN assisting me with childbirth unless there is something wrong. Obviously, if there are complications, I want a MD present. I am going to give birth in the hospital where my Midwife has her water birthing program.
Who was your Dr. in Bklyn. and where was he located? I have one in Bklyn now but it's impossible to get an appointment and I want to have a pre TTC appointment and I'd like to look into other Dr.....
Nina- but do you see a doctor now or just the midwife? And how will you know the doctor in case you do need help that day? Just curious how that works.
It's all up to the midwife. During my pregnancy she can refuse to treat me if she thinks that my pg is complicated and/or high risk (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.). Actually, it's her obligation to tell me to see a MD if she thinks I need to. The same would go for labor and delivery. That's actually the downside of using her, if I do need a Dr. it will have to be the attending physician, but even then, my MW will be there the whole time. I don't have a OB/GYN, and even before I was pg, I saw a midwife in Manhattan who was in a practice with OB/GYNs. She took a lot of time to talk about things with me, something I never experienced with a OB/GYN.
I notice from your screen name - that if that's your zip code, you live where I grew up!! My dr. was Dr. Steven Farber and he is awesome! My Mom and sister now go to him based on my recommendation. The office staff is so nice. His address is 10031 4th Avenue (right near the bridge) and his number is 718.439.8200. Good Luck and have some dinner at Tuscany Grill for me after your appointment!
Actually the 31 is the age I was when I got engaged. I am not 32 but couldn't bare to change my screenname all over the place. Also, I only see female ob/gyns. I have a thing about male doctors in private situations- just not for me.
Sorry Michele, I was referring to Sha11209 who asked about my dr. in Brooklyn...
Thanks for the referral, I'll definately look into him. That is my zip and that's where I grew up too! Where si you go to school?
I don't know what insurance he takes (you can call I guess) but he is affiliated with Maimonides Hospital if I remember correctly. I went to Fort Hamilton HS...born and bred in Bay Ridge!
