How did you go about deciding on a caterer (if you aren't having wedding at a hall)

I am trying to book a caterer. I have about 10,000 caterer info packs in front of me (well okay, maybe not 10,000 but d**n it, it feels like that many).
I am unsure of what to ask, and do I do a tasting before I book??? Help???? I have no clue

I would ask around.
Maybe people who have had parties at home for cristenings, communions, graduations. I would definitely just talk to people I know and trust.

I had to do the same thing. I had about 4 or 5 to choose from, though I guess there were two I was really interested. Maybe try to narrow it down to 2 or 3, and you could try doing that by getting recommendations from other people, or just thinking about the kind of food that sounds best to you (do it when you're hungry!)

The best way to make your ultimate decision is by meeting with the company, though, and seeing how they work, what kind of things they take care of (will they organize rentals, or put out escort cards? Help you find other vendors? What is their presentation like?) They should be able to put together a sample menu for you with ballpark prices. The caterers I went to didn't have a tasting before we booked, though I did try some of their food at an expo and they both came recommended. HTH!
