I would do just that. They are your parents. Just tell them that you are starting to make wedding arrangements and need to plan out your budget. Do they plan to contribute and if so, how much? This way you can start booking things. Good luck!

Re: How do I ask parents
That's how I asked.... they were great about it... Just don't assume, ask them in a way that they don't feel pressured. I just told them I needed to know in order to get my budget ironed out and I could begin looking around for vendors.

Re: How do I ask parents
I would have a sit down with your parents and your FH and ask them to help you out with a budget. Maybe that will open up a dialogue for them to say, 'don't worry sweetie, we'll pay for everything'

Yep. I mean they are your parents they shouldnt get offended. I would be like, 'Mom, dad..Im just curious..are you going to be contributing to the wedding because I need to know what kind of budge Im looking at'

Re: How do I ask parents
We have had same issue with FH's parents. Mine told us right away what they were going to be able to do, but FH's are being a little bit sketchy. Even after FH asked them, his dad danced around the question, so we are going ahead and planing for what we can afford without their help. We are planning on asking them to host the rehearsal dinner and small engagement party (FH will do the asking)!! I hope they come through! I think you should just ask your parents and say something like, 'we're so excited and what to start planning, and we want to get our budget in order first, so we were wondering if you are in the position to help us out?'
Good luck :)

Re: How do I ask parents
This is what I did........... I made a list of estimated costs and one night when I was at my mom and dads house I was like Look at the list of things for the wedding.....then I said maybe we should have it at a later date.....then they asked WHY and it was the perfect opportunity for me to say.......I dont think we can afford all of it. Thats when they said oh dont worry we have a set amount on the side for your wedding. BIG SIGH OF RELIEF

Re: How do I ask parents
I wouldn't 'ask'. I would plan things based on your and FH budget. Then, if they decide to contribute, it will be a blessing.
It's actually not considered proper etiquette to ask anyone to contribute to your wedding costs......jm2cents

Re: How do I ask parents
I think it depends on how close you are to ur parents. When we announced our engagement I said to my mom, 'So how much are you giving me for the wedding' lmao...but I am close to my mom..so it depends

Re: How do I ask parents
My parents are divorced so I approached each one by showing them the rough estimate on how much everything would cost. My dad responded by showing me what he would contribute to (he refused to pay for the reception since it's mostly my mom's side) and my mom said she really could not afford to give that much, but would help by making the centerpieces and several other things. She is really talented and I am just thankful for anything she can give. FH did not want to outright ask his parents either so he just brought up how expensive all of the quotes we have gotten are and that's when the said they would contribute a little. It's tough to ask people for money. What ever they want to contribute I will be more than grateful for.

Re: How do I ask parents
I know its so awkward mentioning it to parents so I just brought up visits with vendors and booking this or that and how much stuff costs.. then I waited for them to mention if they'd contribute anything.
