Re: How do I have my ceremony when . . .
My dad was raised jewish and my mom was hard core catholic. They were allowed to get married in a church, they just couldn't have a mass.

How about a chapel??? There is a beautiful one in Nassau...if you search for chapels you'll find it! Also you can look into non-dinominatioal churches, more spiritual venues then religious.
A traditional church, catholic or christian, will not permit an atheist to get married there...(my husband is also non-religious and I was raised catholic, but after my daugthers' communion, I realzed how freaked out the religion made me feel...all this little girls in white dresses 'giving themselves' to jesus...freaked me out and I've now realized I am not catholic!)
I wanted a spiritual ceremony and found a wonderful pastor...Pastor April from the church of Ancient Ways.
There are lots of small churches on the Island that our houses of spirituality, rather then houses of God... I can ask my friend at work tomorrow to get me some names for you!
Personally I love the chapel idea, churchish but not so much that your FH would be uncomfortable..You don't want him to have a ceremony that pertains to God if he is an athesist, since then the words would mean nothing to him.
Good Luck!

Re: How do I have my ceremony when . . .
I got a lot of slack for not having a church wedding, but I explained to everyone that I have not found my religion yet! like I said I was raised Roman Catholic and planned to raise my daughters the same, my FH even came to church with me to see them sing in the choir and for communion classes, ect.
It took a while for me to realize that i was part of a religion that according to its rules, I am not welcomed in. I had children out of wedlock, i don't believe in confession, or communion, and a lot of other things the religion preaches. Finally after my daughters communion, the religion began to feel more cult-like to me then spiritual.
Its not that i dont believe in something, but I honestly no longer know what that something is, but I do know I believe in Angels and miricales and the likes.
My FH was completely freaked out by the religion and I would never want him to be uncomfortable @ our ceremony. I think you need to decide this between you and FH. You want your ceremony to be something he'll cherish and remember and be personalized for you! You don't want him to be thinking in his head the whole time how he doesn't believe anything the preist is saying...does that make sense? This is for you two, not the family!
Another idea is to join a spiritual ceremony with a semi-religious one. If you want to speak with my Pastor, I'll email you her info. She can help you out a lot and can do semi-religious and personal ceremonies combined! Her first question was how religious am I and FH and she literally personalized every piece of our ceremony to fit our beliefs!
This is the chapel I was talking about! I love it...would've done the ceremony there if it wasn't so far from our RH!

Why do you want to get married in a church?
We are BOTH a bit religious (meaning while we don't go to church every weekend, we do believe in God, were baptized, etc.) and my FH convinced me (I always had dreams of an outdoor wedding) to have it at a church.
I'm really glad we did. The priests we are having are very easy going and interpret things from the bible & their creed openly. The wedding, as they explained it, in a church, makes the wedding a pact between not only bride & groom, but God as well. The priest begins placing the ring on the finger of the bride, and the vows that are said are not only said between the two of us, but also God. We become the new 'Adam and Eve', the start of our own family & our own micro-world.
I thought the parts of the wedding were really symbolic and reinforce the tie with God that your new family is making.
Your FH is sweet to be accommodating, but a church is more than just a building. They also will require records, ect. You should speak to him about this.
Wow...this was long & something I never thought I would be saying. The last few meetings with our priest really changed the way we started thinking about the wedding. Just think about it....
