Is it one per person or one per couple? If its one per person what do you do if one person is bringing a guest?

Re: How do placecards work?
It's normally 1 per couple. If someone is bringing a guest, try and find out that person's name. If that's not possible you would have to put 'Jane Smith and Guest.'

I'm clueless on how they work also. Do you put Mr. and Mrs. Smith or less formal and put first names like John and Jane Smith?

Re: How do placecards work?
Placecards sit on the placesetting--on the table, so therefore they're one per guest. Escort cards sit on a table by the entrance, and let people know which table they're sitting at. I still think they're one per person, as you don't always sit couples together. What if one person is in the bridal party and is sitting at the head table and the other half of the couple is sitting at another table? Not everyone has the bridal party sitting with their partners. So, I think they're one per person, although I can understand if you have a 300 person wedding you'd rather have 150 placecards and not 300 of the suckers. And what you put on the card depends on your wedding's level of formality. If it's a black tie wedding, you should put Mr. Robert Guest, but if it's an outdoor afternoon tent reception, you might want to make it more casual and put Bob Guest. It's up to you, but you can never go wrong being more formal.
