How do u pay ure rent Check or Cash.

My cousin lives downstairs and I just called to see if she was going to drop off her rent? I asked her if she could drop off ours too. She said sure no problem. I said ok Mike wrote a check and she was like 'oh a check she (the landlord) doesnt like checks' Which she kind of hinted at. She said something to the effect of I don't like checks cause then I have to report it. UMMM YA. But then we can't get screwed by u saying u never paid ure rent. My cousin was like put it in an envelope or something.. I am kind annoyed.

We pay cash and get a receipt that the landlord signs every month.

Check.... this way I know I can always provide a returned check as proof of payment.

Cash here, but we get receipts every month. We know it's illegal. The house is a legal 2 family but we know they probably dont report it. They have their own business and I know our rent goes to pay their employees. Grreeeat, right!! But we've been there for almost 3 years and hopefully not too much longer... so nothing bad has happened yet. Most apartments in LI are illegal... I've moved 7 times since 1998 and I doubt one of them was legal! Just the nature of LI, I guess.

I would pay cash if I had to pay rent but honestly if the landlord dosent give receipts I would definitly pay by check.
What about money order?

funny that this topic should come up, my DH and I just had to provide our mortgage company with copies of our rent checks for the past year to show we paid on time. Important to keep!!

I pay by check, but my building is co-ops, & I just rent from from the building owners who still own some of the apartments.

It's all very official- I get interest on the security deposit & everything.My previous apartment, though, was ina house. We paid cash & got receipts, but we didn't have a lease ( my roomate & I) so when they had kids & wanted to move into the 2 bedroom apt in a house they asked us to leave. I guess we could have fough tit, but we prefered to leave on good terms.

But definitely get receipts. Buy a little book of receipts in Staples & bring them to her with your rent & ask her to sign it.

ETA: I hated payign in Cash -I would take it out from the bank near my job in Manhattan & I hated travelling all the way to Astoria with it.

I think the apartment was legal, but we didn't have a lease (which I think is illegal, anyway) so the probably just reported that they earned less rent money than they actually did.

We pay by check, but we also live in a co-op. As for getting screwed if your landlord says you didn't pay your rent, just make sure you get a receipt from him each time you pay. My friend used to pay cash for an apartment and she just picked up a basic receipt book from Staples and had the landlord sign it each time she paid him. It worked out really well that way. hope this helps!

Never pay cash... We alwys used to write checks to protect ourselves and leave a paper trail.

Gah! Don't ever pay your rent with cash unless your landlord gives you a receipt. Under the law, if your landlord refuses to take anything other than cash, you do not have to pay it unless they give you a receipt. If they are so unscrupulous as to try to evict you if you don't pay by cash if they won't give a receipt and they won't accept anything else, put the money in escrow and start looking for a new place to live!!

I can't tell you how many of my clients have been intimidated into paying rent with cash only and not beem given a receipt, and then their landlord sues them for money they've already paid and my clients can't prove it, and have to either pay it again or face eviction.
