Re: How do you...
do you have accrued time available? If so, send an email that you would like to request vacation days for so and so dates

I hear ya and wish I had some good suggestions. I am always so hesitant and that is why I spend most of my life at the office and being miserable. I don't know how your job works with days off but just know that your entitlements are just that. You do not need to feel guilty if every once in awhile you have something you need or want to do. You gotta live your life!!!! Try not to get caught in a trap; it is very easy to do. The more you speak up and are vocal, the better it is for you in the long run.

I usually fill out a slip (we have time-off slips) and leave it on my supervisors desk. Simple, I don't usually feel guilty at all. If it doesn't interfere with other peoples vacations or what not than why should you feel guilty? Its your time, you earned it.

This is exactly how we do it at my office as well
Honestly I USED to stress about taking time off and making my bosses(and everyone ) happy - but that is pointless
Like Tracey said, its your time off and its coming to you - you are ENTITLED to it - don't feel any guilt asking for time off, its just not worth it!!

We also fill out a slip. If I know I need off I try to give my boss 2 weeks notice. I took off the Friday of Memorial Day weekend back in April cuz I knew everyone would want that

Is this too whiny of an email to the higher authorities...??
As I mentioned before I started working here permanently, I am going to need to take some days off. I would rather let you know ahead of time than call in at the last minute—even if it is only two days notice. I’ve had a test scheduled for Monday, May 9th that I cannot miss. And I also need to take off on May 6th. I’m sorry it’s last minute, but so many things have come up and I’d like to be able to just deal with them all at once.

I think it sounds fine. If you told them you would need time off, they should be understanding. My boss is pretty good if you give her some notice and not just call in.
