How do you acknowledge a lost loved one in a program?
My dad passed away 7 years ago and I lost my last grandparents a few years ago. I really want to mention my dad and grandparents in my wedding program. How do I do that in a nice way, that is not generic, that is uplifting? Please give me some suggestions. TIA!

When my friend got married a few years ago, she had her officiant say a prayer for her grandfather and for her dh's mother who was very ill and was not able to attend the wedding.

Im sorry for the loss of your father. My hsubands father also passed away and so we acknwoledged it in our program, we said at the end of it :
Some people come into our lives and quickly go, some stay for ahwile and leave foot prints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same. In loving memory of ....... we also had the Rev say something about lighting the candle for Dh's dad and then Dh lit the candle. Our candle had In loving memory of... on it. it was a very nice candle and it wsa lit throughout our ceremony. Hope this helps

This is what I did...
'On this special day, we fondly remember those who have gone before us. Photos and roses for them are in a place of honor in the front of the sanctuary.'

depending on how much it still affects everyone you might want to speak with your mom, siblings (if any) or any of your father's family who is attending to see how they feel about anything....we did some more subtle things for dh's mom b/c it was still so fresh and painful and we wanted ot focus on the positives of the day instead of the negatives -
we did little things like the unity candle (b/c his mom loved candles), naming a list of people in the program from both our sides, having a sunflower (her fav flower) on the head table of dh's side, a memorial/family table with pics of all of us together with my fmaily and dh's in pictures, giving a donation in everyone's name to a lung cancer non-profit which was printed with an angel on it (she died of lung cancer and loved angels) and doing the votive placecards (since she loved candles)..... some were obvious but others were more sutble
its kind of morbid but both dh and i also each carried a mass card (is that what you call them?? - the cards that say the person's name and date of death???) so if you have one of them you could also tuck it in a pocket or something somewhere
good luck - its hard even 7 years later i am sure

awh....some of the past post are really so sweet. i lost my grandma and god father last december. i was especially close to my grandma so we are having a small bouquet made for her and leaving it on the alter. we are also going to have two candles lit on the alter to symobolize their eternal light. my priest is going to say something before the mass starts to let everyone know why they are there... etc. i am also noting it in my program

I am going to have something said for my grandfather who passed away a few months ago and for FIs aunt who passed in November, but I don't think anyhting you decide to say will actually be uplifting...JMO

Not sure if this poem was mentioned before but I got my mom a stone for her garden after my dad passed away. It reads:
If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
------------------------------------------ So sorry about your loss!

Re: How do you acknowledge a lost loved one in a program?
here are some pasages that i have collected.... In memory of loved ones past...
Although death has separated us physically, faith and love have bound us eternally. Though we cannot see you, we know you are here, though we cannot touch you, we feel the warmth of your smile, as we begin our new lives.
Today we pause to reflect upon those who have shaped our character, molded our spirits and touches our hearts.
Let us not forget the ones that time and god has departed from our world, but not before they graced us with special memories only they could create. May our loved ones that touched our lives deeply, but only stayed briefly, be looking over us today as we create our new lives as one.
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched; they must be felt with the heart.' -Hellen Keller

Re: How do you acknowledge a lost loved one in a program?
thank you guys for all your wonderful suggestions. We are Jewish so we don't have a mass card or unity candle. But you gave me some great ideas. Thank you so much for your advice and kind thoughts.

On the last page of our program we had a memoriam for my brother. We put in loving memory of Jerry and then we had a beautiful poem underneath it!!
We also lit a memorial candle in the beginning of our ceremony.
