We have this situation w/ someone that didn't announce she was separated but is back at home w/ her parents....we're going to still address it Mrs. A. (married name) b/c nothing has been said to anyone...

I would do anyone recently separated as Ms. and no guest. If it's not recent and there has been enough time or word that she is dating, then you can add a guest. Also... she may take her maiden name back so I'd check.

i heard that it is 'proper etiquette' to still put Mrs. Jane Doe even if Jane is divorced but i'm not sure, that's just what i heard.
either way, you may not even want to do the 'proper' way in which case i would say Ms. Jane Doe would be sufficient.

I have this problem too... for FH parents!! They separated after 28 years!! I am sending them separate invites and hers will say Ms. Jane Doe (married name because as far as I know she is keeping it). I don't know how proper it is, but it's whatever makes them comfortable. I am not inviting either with a guest, at this point it just wouldn't be appropriate.

Not to be a downer or to sound mean ('cause it's not my thing)....
But if someone had invited my mother to anything as Mrs. after her divorce, she would've been offended or thought that the family member/friend didn't pay much attention to things since the news of divorce stats travel like lightning in our family....She knows she still has the name, but she is in no way a Mrs., in fact the last time someone mistakenly called her Mrs. she promptly corrected them rather sharply.
Also, 'Mrs.' implies marriage. Guys are lucky...they are Mr. no matter what.

My MIL still goes by Mrs. even though it was a bad divorce and FIL has remarried. I think it depends on the person. I don't think she'd want to be called Ms.
Since this is a separation and not a divorce, I'd probably still use Mrs. I think either one is ok to use.

You have a great point...alas, I think the answer lies in just asking the lady/people in question as some people would be fine with Mrs. and some would not. It's like writing 'and guest'...it's really offensive to some people as they may have been around for years, are engaged to the named person or live with them...it takes 1 minute to find out a name or what someone would prefer to be called. Hope we are all being helpful.
