Just curious -- how do you feel about people getting you gifts that aren't things you registered for? FH and I are running into some relatives who want to get us things for the bathroom/bedroom for my shower. Of course, we are completely appreciative of their generosity but we specifically did not register for linens or furniture type things because we're moving shortly after the wedding and aren't sure what color the bed/bath will be. Just want to know what the general feeling about non-registry gifts is

I like gift cards.......
I think I'd like people to stick to my registry....not to be a meanie. But it is the thought that counts, so I guess I'm ok with it.

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
right now it's just frustrating me that i know a lot of fh's family got me things that were not on the registry (probably fancy decorative things) when they know we'll be in an apartment for at least a few years, and won't have the room.
And meanwhile, I don't have things that we really need (like our dishes )
Oh well, I guess if worst comes to worst, I've been using my mom's old dishes for the last few years - they're about 18 years old, and have lost a few pieces that were broken, but I actually really like the pattern - more so than much of the stuff I saw
I just feel that as of Monday I'll be thinking 'Well, I may not have any towels, but at least I have this lovely lenox dolphin'

I feel like ripping all my bakeware off the registry which is what everyone seems to be purchasing and NOT the things we REALLY need. And why they thought I needed THREE muffin pans is beyond me when I only registered for one and then they added some pastry bag thingy which I don't need. Yes, I appreciate EVERYTHING people buy since they really don't have to buy me anything at all but I really wish they'd stick to the list and use their heads!

It wouldn't be my FIRST choice....but I still feel very appreciative of those gifts too. I have a lot of older realitives great aunts and such that could not, no matter how hard anyone tried, understand how to work registry....It makes me smile to try and picture them in the store trying to get it and giving up and buying something entirely different...oh well

Well, my shower was this past weekend and not to sound ungreatful but most of the gifts that I got not from my registry will be returned...aside from engraved ones which obviously cant be returned. I just have no need for those gifts.
I mean not for nothing don't you make a registry to give your guests a huge hint as to what you want!?

Im the opposite lol, I already have my china and everyday dishes, we have been living together for 8 years now and got so much stuff at our housewarming, and my shower the other day FMIL bought us 16 place settings of Noritake and his aunt bought us an 8 place settings of our everyday dishes. So i have tooooooooooo many dishes, the funny thing is we didnt get not one towel or sheet set at the shower, almost everything was for dining and kitchen, i think that was a hint from his family that i need to cook more

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
Well, since I haven't had my shower yet right now I am ok with non-registry gifts. Some of my friends are really creative and I wouldn't mind at all. But I have a feeling I may change my tune once I start getting stuff off the registry.

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
We have received both registry and non-registry gifts and only one non-registry gift was something that we liked. I would have registered for it if I had seen it. It was a nice glass bowl. The other non-registry gifts were a chicken applique kitchen towel and the 'bleeding heart bud vase' neither fit in with our midcentury modern decor.

At my shower, we did receive some non-registry items. While I do appreciate people's generosity, some of the items were just not my or my FH's taste. Mind you, we received these gifts from my FMIL. She was the only person at the shower who did not buy from the registry.

I would rather people stick to the registry. As far as towels we went with white. I think they are crisp and remind me of the spa

It's a nice surprise to get things that you didn't register for - as long as it's your style. If it's not, find out some how, where they bought it so you can return it for something else!
Gift cards are great!! Let's you buy exactly what you want!

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
We were lucky. At both our eparty and my shower (last weekend) almost everybody bought from our registry. We got a few e-gifts before we registered, but mostly just candle stick which are fine. For the wedding, however, FH's step-mother's family are coming (don't ask) from SC, and they seem to think that non-registry gifts are the only 'non-tacky' gifts. I seem to think that they shouldn't be surprised when their kids get the same gifts back for their wedding

I haven't had my shower yet, but I kinda hope everyone sticks to the registry. I appreciate any gift, but his family is known for getting me stuff like ceramic statues and dust collectors- totally not out style. For Christmas his grandma have me a two foot tall heart shaped cermaic thing with doves and cherubs.

I would rather people stick to the registry also or get gift cards to the stores we registered at, it just makes more sense. Either way whatever isnt purchased, FH and I will buy ourselves.

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
I know I should be grateful for any gift, but I prefer that people stick to the registry, unless they get something we could certainly use like a good bottle of wine or a coffee gift set.
I am finding it odd that people have purchased things at BB&B that we did not register for, and there are still tons of things in a variety of price ranges available. We are going to have to exchange all of the non-registry gifts so far--we really can't use them.

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
why bother registering if people aren't going to stick to it? If someone registers for all for all kinds of different items in all price ranges, I don't see why people who want to buy a gift would not stick to the registry. IMO

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
Well in general I think non-registry gifts only work if the person is really close to you.
Great non-registry gifts: 1. Tickets to a Broadway show from FIL. (Their shower gift and they asked up first which shows we'd like) 2. A folding backbend bench for yoga. (From the Bridesmaids. They ran this one past me before getting it.) This was great because we can both use it.
Not so Great NON-registry gifts: 1. Anything wedding related: guest book, card holder ... Chances are you have it or don't want it. Or have something else on your registry
2. Glass bowls
3. Anything personalized
4. Jewerly. I know the though it there, but this is really personal item. I have so many ugly things that I can't get rid of because they were gifts.

Re: How do you feel about non-registry gifts?
I have only had my work shower but I have to say my favorite present was a non-registery gift. My FH said he enough candle type stuff(which I LOVE) but I know once we move out of our tiny condo and into a house I will want more. So I got this awesome hurricane candle that I can see on a table in our backyard once I have one. I also got a beautiful set of wind chimes so I guess I just have been lucky.
