How do you feel about pit bulls?

How do you feel about pit bulls?

My FH would love to get a baby pit bull, his friends have 2 that are amazingly well behaved and excellent guard dogs. I know they are great if raised the right way from when they are young, but I can't help be a little nervous around them, what do you think?

Not nervous. As long as they are raised well they are just like any other dog. Remember though a dog can always turn any dog.

I've had a pitt bull and she was the sweetest little dog. My mother's friend had rescued her from a fighting ring of some sort, but she was not at all aggressive. I really think it depends on how they're raised. We got her young, so I think that made a difference.

I feel the same way about pit bulls that I do about Rottweilers...its all in how your raise them and the temperment of the parents. I have a VERY loving 2 1/2 yr old Rotti.

I have no issues with them but I would caution you since you say you are even a little nervous around them ...

Ditto. I was about to say I think they can be great pets, etc. but they can pick up on your nervousness.

DH and I have a pit bull (he's 4) and he's got a great temperment around people -- but he is very aggressive around any other dog.

I think as long as they are raised right they are good dogs. But I think you need to get them from a reputable breeder. A good breeder should be able to watch for aggressive dogs and not breed those that are questionable.. just like when I adopted my chihuahua I made sure I found a breeder who had a strong understanding of the dog, its personality traits as well as inherant genetic flaws- and bred them accordingly... I think for a pitbull, you need to pay the extra $$ for this assurance, instead of just getting from NSAL.

they make me nervous.....

and, yes, ANY dog can turn, for ANY reason.

My neighbor had a terrible incident with her dog a Bull Mastif (sommthing like that).
He was sweet and loving, and also happened to weigh about 100 pounds more than her.....
One day, he lost it and attacked her. He was chewing on her face, and luckily her husband was home - he grabbed the dog off of her, but not before serious damage was done....she still has scars on her face from the attack.

They had never had problems with the dog before, and have no idea what caused it to act like that....and sadly, they had to put it to sleep....

I know that this is an uncommon situation....but that's what i think about when i think about aggressive dogs....

True, any dog can turn ... when I was ten I was bit in the face by a LAB/Doberman mix - I was afraid of black dogs almost until I was an adult.

I also know my sweet little Hershey (who is deaf) has nipped me once in a blue moon because she didn't know I was there but it it freaked her for someone to 'suddenly appear' ...

I agree I don't really care for pit bulls to much and if u have small children around u never want to take that chance or have to be on edge all the time!!

If you get one from a reputable breeder and raise it with lots of love, I would never be nervous. I would just really check its pedigree so you are sure there are no 'trouble' dogs that would have a gentic tie with your puppy.

Re: How do you feel about pit bulls?

Pit Bulls and Rotties have horrible reputations because some owners WANT their dogs to be vicious and raise them like that. I am the proud owner of a beautiful loving 5 month old rottie and I see people every day who steer their children away from my puppy and even adults. We live on a block with MANY children and babies and she has been out and about playing with them since she was 8 weeks old and has never had an incident. Is that to say she wouldn't? No...but for people to question pit bulls and rotties specifically because they are the only dogs news people target I think is unfair. ALL DOGS have the ability to turn - they're animals. Shepards, labs even little dogs. It just bothers me that you never hear anyone saying 'how do you feel about poodles?' I understand the concern, but it should be for ALL dogs.....JMO

I think pits are beautiful dogs who have a bad reputation. But definitely get them as pups. Some people are iresponsible when breeding them and from what I gathered from the special on A & E..the gene pool in these dogs can be messed up by breeders mating mother & son, daughter & father etc since they are popular dogs and at times you get a naturally vicious dog becuase the DNA is all screwed up. So I figure as long as you are cautious and know the breeders history you should be ok.

Re: How do you feel about pit bulls?

I always thought smaller dogs were more aggressive than bigger dogs. They always feel the need to bark and look mean because of their size.

I agree that any dog can turn bad. Don't single out a pittbull or rottweiler. It's all about how they're raised. Drug dealers and whatever other shady people like to have pittbulls and train them to attack. Then next thing you know, they let them go, and the dog is on its own and attack someone else because that is what it is taught. I have met dogs like this that got new owners and were thankful and turned out well. They had cigarette burns on them, etc. It is just horrible.

But the point is any dog can turn out like this. Dalmations are known to be mean dogs also. It just depends on the dog and its personality. If you have it since it's a puppy, it depends on how you raise it.

I wouldn't trust one around children.
