How do you pick a DJ?

I am about to begin my search for a DJ, and I have no idea how to do this. I know I will see demo tapes, but I still feel like no matter who you book it is a gamble. The music is such a critical part of the wedding. So I will take any recommendations for a DJ who is fun, and professional, yet not cheesy. I am not looking for organized dancing (I dont think) or give aways. I dont need all kinds of funky lighting either. Just a great DJ that will keep the party going? Suggestions? Thanks so much...

I chose mine b/c he knew the type of music that FH and I liked best...he had great suggestions...I clicked...

I had a really hard time choosing a DJ for the same reasons that you mentioned. I was afraid of making the wrong choice. We met with tons of DJ's and finally booked with one that came reccommeded to us by a friend of my FH. We just knew after speaking to some of the DJ's that they weren't the ones for us. The first thing I would consider is cost. If you don't want all the give-aways, and can do with out the fancy lighting (we opted not to have these things either) then you can cut your costs a bit. Once you have established your budget you will be able to pick and choose a little more easily. Good Luck with your search. hi diane! was your dj joey guise (not sure of the spelling sounds like 'guys') tall and skinny with black hair? i will be going to check out tommy tunes withing the next few weeks and was wondering which mc to go w/--any advice on them would be very helpful----thanks for your help
