I steam them two ways...the 'real' way and the 'lazy' way.
Real way...put one of those steamer baskets over a pot with a small amount of water in the bottom. When water is boiling add vegetables (water should not touch vegetables) and cover. Timing depends on the vegetable but you can check as you go.
Lazy way..(which FH likes better) cut up vegetables and put in a microwave safe bowl. Put enough water to just coat the bottom of the bowl. Cover in plastic wrap and microwave about 5 minutes (again depending on the vegetable-I usually start at about 2-3 min and then check) Drain water and ready to serve!

I have a microwave steamer. I put kosher salt in the water, and add garlic to the veggies.

I have the pampered chef thingy! I love it! You just put a bit of water in the bottom with the veggies in it. Nuke it and drain the water out using the top. I use it for other purposes than just steaming veggies too. I love pampered chef!

steamer basket...i usually cook until the color is almost vibrant, then take it off. remember that veggies and pasta and meat still cook itself after you take it off the heat, so you have to remember to take it off a couple of seconds early or you'll get mushy veggies. also, steaming protects the nutriients, unlike boiling or microwaving.
