DH and I want to buy a home or apartment, but even with the money we got at our wedding and little bit we have saved, we wouldnt be able to afford anything over like $200,000. Now this could buy us a nice starter home out of the NY area, but how do people come up with the money for a starter home here? Everything Im seeing is like $400,000+! Its so frustrating. My mom and dad are building this new home and its going to have 3 big bedrooms and be like 2600-3000 sq ft and are paying like 410,000 for it. That home here would be over 1 million. I think I need to convince DH to move unless his music career pans out... but I dunno if he will move cus he has never lived away from his family, but I can't stand the thought of renting for another 10 years...

I have no clue either!! If it was not for the fact we would terribly miss our families.. we would move in a heart beat.. It is totally ridiculous!

I am wondering the same thing, some people are lucky and have family helping, others just have great paying jobs. Don't worry you will get a house one day

And like for me- I only have my sister here. And of course allll of DH's family. But I grew up in maine and my parents family was in Ohio and scattered everywhere else. So I only see them all at holidays. So Im used to traveling to see family- so moving wouldnt be a big deal for me at all!

i feel your pain..unfortunately our jobs and family are holding us back from moving too far..right now we are living upstairs from my parents to try and save money

Were in the same boat. I have know idea how anyone affords it here. We dont make bad money.. i mean its nothing great but not terrible and well be lucky if we could afford a condo... I see alot of girls here buying houses and i cant figure out what were doing wrong..

i think a lot of people take out loans (and i dont mean the mortgage loan - i mean like personal loans) and a lot of people get help from their families - and use credit cards! FH and I have ZERO credit card debt, we refuse to take out any types of loans and our parents DO NOT have money so that is why we are still in an apartment hahahha - no but seriously, we can def afford something small here but i would have to continue working to keep up with it especially if we had kids - i cant imagine being able to afford a mortgage, 2 kids and dog without me working so that is why we plan on moving out of state - so we can keep up with the lifestyle we currently have, have a home and be able to afford children on one salary....

What I've seen is that a lot of people live with their families until they save enough to be able to buy their own home. If they haven't lived with family they've moved to small places paying the least amount in rent they could and just tried to hoarde all other cash, basically they had no life.
It's tough to buy here and especially on LI or all the other suburbs becuase of taxes..not only are the houses expensive but now taxes are through the roof. Who wants to pay an additaionl $500-$100 a month in taxes alone.

Well I had bought a coop in Garden City 4 years ago before I met FH,, so when I sold that we used that money for a down payment.. That's the only way we were about to afford a home in the upper $400k

And I totally understand people have different situations and income of course. But I was curious how people who make under 80K a year are able to do it! Looking for some pointers I guess!!! We are trying to save but its been hard since we dont make much anyway. And we got some wedding money, but not enough for a down payment on anything over like $100,000. LOL. What i the average percentage for a down payment anyway?

Thats what I think we will have to do! I really dont want to be a working mom- not that anything si wrong with that, but i dont like what I do enough to do it while I have kids.

yeah thats the other thing! taxes! INSANE!!!! Thats the other things that makes me sick with my parents- I think thet pay like 2500-3K a year for taxes!

Yeah what she said lol... Thats about our income and we def cant buy anything right now, even if we had the 20% or whatever to put down.

Believe me, it's not easy. FH and I have been really good at saving lately, and I think that plays a huge part. We don't eat out, we don't go on trips and we really haven't spent money on anything other than the wedding/house. NY is ridiculously expensive, but I couldn't ever imagine leaving. Both of our families are here and we couldn't just pick up and leave unless they all came with us! lol I do understand where you are coming from though. There really aren't any decent homes for sale on LI for less than $400k. Good Luck!

i have no idea - i dont mean this in snotty way but my FH makes very good money and my job is alright, my salary is nothing crazy but i get paid pretty decently so between us we make good money - i see people who i know for a fact make way less than us doing it and im like but like i said, my fh and i have 0 debt and we also have a lot of money saved that we dont like to touch - i know that other people have some debt issues, dont have a savings, live more paycheck to paycheck and they get some help here and there - so i guess thats the difference maybe? some people are brave i guess my FH and i are very conservative with our money

Im looking at home in NC in the raliegh area cus I think my parents want to move there in like 5 years and my sister wants to move there eventually. This makes me sick!!! Its a normal house at what is usually considered a normal price, but you know it would be a lot more here!!!

Im more conservative than DH!! He has a hard time saving! I think I need to be on him more about that! LOL!

if it wasn't for DH alreadying owning his place, we'd never be able to do it! right now we're fixing our place up so we can sell it and look for a home, and it's so hard to find something decent in a good school district within our budget, but moving really isnt' an option for us, nor do we really want to move out of the area.

we were going to put in an offer on a house last week but it turns out they were already in contract - it was on the market for 210K and it was on 1/2 acre, with a huge backyard, huge gorgeous pool and screenhouse, built in 2005, this house was amazing - the thing is we can afford the mortgage on something like that and still manage to rent up here until we are ready to go - its amazing what you can get in other states....i just want a really nice big house with a big backyard, i want to life comfortable and i want to have the option to stay home if i want in a few years when the kids are growing up - i know that i cant have any of those things up here so for us its not worth it to stay....plus my parents and sister are down there - we are trying to recruit FILS and FSIL to move too but its not working to well
