I really want to get a handle on all the details so I can budget correctly.

It really is never too early - especially if you have particular vendors in mind...imo. We booked our photographer & band a couple of months ago for our 9/04 wedding.
As for the budget...I think it helps - spreads out the payments (should only be 3) and locks in who & what you want.

Bigger name vendors book really far in advance. If you are flexible though, you really can wait. I booked my DJ and photographer about 3 months in advance.

I booked most of my vendors 1 1/2 years before my wedding. The earlier you book, the better prices you get and the better chance you have of getting the photographer, videographer, dj, mc, etc that you want.

Not at all. I got engaged Feb 2001 and by April 2001 I had all my vendors booked. The earlier you book, you get a choice of vendors and you get to pay 2003's not 2004's price.

I would book as soon as you have found someone you are comfortable with- even excited about- and you can afford the deposits. You don't want them to be booked by someone else. (THat kept happening to me! )

It is never too early. We locked in Patken about a week and a half ago. They had seven photographers available for 9/5/04 (our wedding day) and SIX of them were already booked. So we lucked out totally. Spreading out the payments is also important. I feel so much better having exactly a year or little more to come up with the funds.

id say start looking now....... you should get your photo and video picked right away(i have nov04 which is less popular and many vendors were booked months ago when i was looking)

The earlier you book the cheaper the price. I just booked In The Mood DJ. Got the cheapest package- no lights for $1300. They just did my sisters wedding and were great

You can definitely book now. I went to the florist Tuesday and he said he's 70% booked for prime-months for 2004 already.

if you have a person in mind, then book early. My first choice was already booked over a year before my wedding.
