I promised someone that I would do something on Monday, long story, but it involved making some phone calls and finding out some information for her. Well, I forgot. It was something extremely important too. When I called her today, she reminded me and said that she was hoping I would call earlier with the info. Well, now it is too late. I told her how horrible I felt and apologized profusely. I admitted that I have been very wrapped up in my wedding that is in 9 days, plus we closed on our co-op last week and I am trying to finish my degree. I told her that that is no excuse and that family should have come first and that I hope she can forgive me. I was in tears by the end of the conversation because I felt so badly. She was so cold to me and no matter how much I apologized, she did not let up. I took responsibility for everything, apologized and admitted to being self-absorbed, but it didn't even matter. She couldn't help but tell me how disappointed in me she is.
I don't know what to do now. I am hoping this will all blow over, but I'm so dissappointed in myself. I am a very forgiving person. All you have to do is apologize and I am over it. So my question is, how forgiving are you? Do you forgive and forget? I have to say, it really ****s when people don't.

It depends on the person and the circumstance. In your case, I think your friend is overreacting just a bit! You have done all you can do!

Re: How easily do you forgive?
Sometimes I think I forgive too easily. It has allowed too many people to walk all over me in the past. But at the same time, I don't let much get to me, so I guess it's ok if they walk all over me. But definitely, I forgive TOO much TOO often.

Re: How easily do you forgive?
So how much do you apologize and admit that you were at fault before you say there is nothing else you can do to make it up and this person just needs to get over it. This is the type of person who will always have this in the back of her mind. I don't know how to just let it go and say I did all that I could, and just feel ok with that. This is why I don't hold grudges. People make mistakes.

I don't forgive easily, Once I am betrayed it takes alot to forgive if I ever even do! I just make sure of the betrayal before I end a friendship.

Re: How easily do you forgive?
I think I am very forgiving. If someone apologizes for something they did, I forget about everything and let it go. I don't re-hash it later. We all make mistakes and nobody's perfect.

Re: How easily do you forgive?
Don't be so hard on yourself. With your wedding right around the corner; things could easily be forgotten. I can understand feelings can get hurt; ESPECIALLY around weddings. People let their emotions get the best of them! Hopefully it will blow over! Holding a grudge is not worth it sometimes!

I thought about flowers or a card, but I thought that might just bring it all up again. I thought maybe to just let it be and give her some time?

Re: How easily do you forgive?
I would have to say that it depends on the situation. I am usually a pretty forgiving person. We all make mistakes, myself included, and since I expect people to forgive me my screw-ups, I have to be able to forgive them theirs. That being said, however, there are certain things that I don't forgive quite so easily, for instance hurting one of my kids or my husband. That does not go over well with me at all!!
In your case I think you have so much on your plate already that what happened is understandable. You have apologized and obviously feel terrible about what happened. If someone is not able to forgive you then it's their problem not yours. Try not to beat yourself up too much.

I think you apologized enough. You are truly sorry. If she doesn't forgive you,its her problem.

Re: How easily do you forgive?
Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I am so upset becuase I have always had a bit of a rocky relationship with this person, yet she means a lot to me. I thought we were making progress in our relationship and now I feel like we are back to square one. I guess I just need to stop obsessing and give her time to get over it. Not much else I can do. Thanks for all the hugs!

Re: How easily do you forgive?
NovemberSue said what I was going to say. Personally, as long as I believe I have a genuine apology, I'll let it go, but I'll remember it.
I don't think its right to make a person grovel -- people make mistakes, its life, things happen and then you move on.

Re: How easily do you forgive?
Helene, that wasn't very nice of her. I agree; if someone apologizes to me (and is clearly sorry like you were), I totally forgive them.
