I'm just starting with the planning. I wanted to know how far in advanced do you usually ask/tell your BM's? and is there a specific way that you have to ask them?

You can ask them at any time! Just make sure you choose your girls wisely, you don't want to get stuck with someone you may not be friends with come wedding time.
Some girls give their BMs cookies with 'Will you be my Bridesmaid?' on them, some girls give them cards, some girls don't do any thing like that and just ask them! All up to you!

Yes.....take your time and do not rush choosing your girls!!!! They were the biggest headache of my wedding planning! choose wisely!

I asked my girls pretty much right away. But I only have 3 girls. I asked them and then about 2 or 3 months later had a get together so they could meet each other (2 knew each other but neither knew the MOH). At that meeting, I gave them all cards with a poem in it, a candle, and a picture frame that I put a paper in that said 'reserved for wedding'

ive known forever who I wanted to have so I asked right away
but i agree with some girls, take your time in thinking about who you want. my FH still hasnt asked his guys yet because he wants to make sure they will all be the ones who dont give him a hard time, and will always be there for us before and AFTER the wedding

I asked my girls last month - or maybe a bit before - but they are my 3 closest friends from hs and I knew it was them or no one. Otherwise, like everyone else said, wait a bit and make sure you can count on all of your picks.

I am actually going to start asking my girls this weekend! I got my items off of etsy. I have a personalized champagne flute that has their name on it with a dress that is in my colors (lavender with a gray sash) and on the bottom either says bridesmaid or MoH (loved this idea until FH was like ummm its nice but what are they going to do with it? I figured it is a cute keepsake but somewhat doubting myself now) and a card with a personalized poem for each bridesmaid.
FH still doesn't fully know who he is asking. Not sure if I am rushing into it but I want to ask them!

Just a small piece of advise, don't rush it. You have plenty of time to decide I realize you are excited and you should be but if you pull the trigger too soon and later regret your decision it makes for a sticky situation. I'm sure you think nothing will change, I know I did but people have a way of acting out when it comes to weddings. Regardless, congrats and happy planning.

Right as i started planning..some knew earlier then others..and i got them all shirts that say 'team bride' bridesmaid.. theres a lot of cute things you can do if you dont want to just ask

We asked a little over a year out, but we had a two year engagement. A majority of our party is family so I wasn't too worried about it-but there have been some people that have proven to us it doesn't matter if your family, they still give you a run for your $$. We asked them with homemade cards with poems inside. We also had shirts made for the entire bridal party.

I asked my girls about a month after we got engaged. We all went out to dinner and I asked them then. We did a big get together in Feb, just so everyone could get to know one another, even though most of my girls know each other well.

I waited about two months after my engagement.
I had a high school style girls-night-in sleepover, and gave each of the girls a frame with a poem/photos of us. pics are in my bridesmaid album.

This has been an interesting conversation since we got engaged. I want to ask my girls in a special way, FI doesn't really care how he asks. He's got an extra guy and we've been deciding whether to just have an extra guy or if I should ask another girl. Now I'm thinking about asking my oldest cousin to walk with FI's cousin to balance things out. My father wants me to whisper to my sister that I want her in my bridal party but I want to make it special because we've only recently become very close. We've been engaged for 3 months and I don't have plans on asking soon, maybe around 10 months to a year out from the wedding. Basically whenever you feel it's right, just take your time and make sure you are sure. GL
