some of the places I'm looking at are out East on the island. Majority of my guests are all OOT (FH's fam) and I guarantee will be coming in from JFK or LaGuardia. So if I booked a place that was let's say an hour to 2 away from there (and I'm not including traffic)...... how would that be?
I tend to think more about my guests as I'm planning thislol.
I also don't want a crazy expensive hotel for them to stay at (i'm going to a wedding next month and there's only 2 hotels to choose from and both are $200+ a night for a Holiday Inn and Best Western!!) i don't want to burden the future in laws with the flight, the wedding, the extra traveling, the hotel, the gas prices they're not used to (sh!t by that time though it'll probably be $8 a gallon!) etc, etc.
Tell me what you think!!

Re: how far is too far to travel to a wedding?
Okay I asked this question a while ago, and got very mixed response. It really depends on the people I guess.
I'm a little lucky most are all coming from the same point A ... so I'm getting them a couple of busses to get to point B.
I would block hotels by the airport, then see if you can arrange a shuttle from the airport for your guests.

All of DH's guests & some of mine were from OOT...we tried to have them fly in to McArthur in Islip if they could...and those that couldn't didn't mind the hike out to Hampton Bays...and made a long weekend out of it...
ETA: we had people coming from a variety of far away places & countries, so the extra hour or two wasn't a big deal.

i am from the east end.. my reception will be at giorgios. 90% of our guests are from upstate. I feel bad about the long travel and the expensive hotel rooms... but oh well! If people care about you they will make the trip. I was really worried about it too but my mom finally got me to realize it's about ME and people will do what they have to.

Hampton's Bride, I'm tired of hearing about your reasonable and logical guests, don't you know some of the rest of us are dealing with evil evil family members that complain about everything.
Just kidding, I'm so happy to see your still around the boards, your wedding reviews was one of my favorties!

I'm steeling that quote and tatooing it on my forhead...

hahaha... I am sorry...i guess everyone was just excited that after almost 6 years together we were finally getting married...haha
But i also laid down the law early and said...'If you do not like it...you do NOT have to come!' Believe me, i had my share of people i wanted to kill...hence the sign on my door that said 'Never mind the dogs, beware of the bride!'

OMG, I absolutely LOVED that sign!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much that I saved it ... and still have it on my computer, along with some other old wedding stuff.
That is toooooooooo funny! I am in the same boat, we are doing Montauk. When all is said and done, there is no perfect spot. (Except maybe an airport hotel) If we did it in the city, people would moan about parking and subways. Some of my friends from Jersey may not come, which is a bummer, but more of my family from LI will make it. If you find a spot you feel passionate about go for it, if it's a close call go for the ease. ( I may be singing a different song about this after my mom rides the LIRR for three hours!)

i would look at it this way. if someones going to take a flight to make it to my wedding, whats an hour in the car? besides, they could stay in a hotel closer to the venue and then have less than an hour drive. everyone keeps reminding me, the ones you truly want there, will be there no matter what

yep, thats right! One of the great advantages of having an inconvenient location. It weeds out the ones you don't want!

If most of your guest are already OOT then really whats adding on a car ride. Those who can afford the flight and hotel, will make an exception for the car ride.
You can also look into hiring a van/bus to take them out there. It might cost you a little more but save them money and it could be fun!

The people that want to be there will be there- FH and I flew to Vegas for very close friends of ours- and nothing would have kept us from that wedding- so dont worry and have your wedding where it makes you happy- the important people will be there!

Re: how far is too far to travel to a wedding?
I traveled all the way to Ireland for one friend's wedding and all the way to Wyoming for another friend's. I chose to use it as a vacation. Most people who went did. It was great! So I don't think 2 hours is far at all. LOL

Re: how far is too far to travel to a wedding?
being that ur wedding is on LI and not NYC< most of ur guests will prolly rent a car anyway. Have it where you like! Maybe suggest hotels as close to your hall as possible.

you know i argued with FH about this and I think I won. Considering we are driving 14 hours to his cousins wedding next month, what argument is there? lol
