A house we saw had it in the kitchen. That was really the only thing we didnt like. Can it be changed easily?

It depends what shape the wall is behind it. You'll never know until you take it down unfortunately.

if the condition of the sheetrock is bad or there is no sheetrock under you could always paint the paneling

you can also paint over paneling, in case it's not an option to take it down.

My FSIL an FBIL just bought a hpuse a few months ago. When they took the paneling down the sheetrock underneath was in really bad condition. They ended up replacing all of the sheetrock!

It will look OK - like painted paneling LOL, Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, I think white painted panneling is nice. BUT, but would you rather have nice smooth walls? You have to decide!

Is it the whole house or just one room? If it's just in one room then just paint the panneling white and call it a day! If it's the whole house then I'd be concerned about what the walls actually look like beneath it.

For extra insulation, my in-laws put up new sheetrock over the paneling.

Funny you posted this. We just looked at houses on Sunday and we saw one that was OK... but the entire house was covered in paneling!

We are going back to one tonight. It has paneling in the kitchen so its workable. Otherwise we liked it. I would fix the kitchen.

We took the paneling down in some rooms and the walls were (fortunately) fine behind them. In one guest room two walls were panelled and I was lazy so the painter just painted over them. It turned out nice. I'll try to take pics tonight.

paneling must have been really popular in the 70s and 80s....almost every house we look at has the darn wood paneling!

When we bought our house, there was paneling in the livingroom and hallway. My hubby ripped it down and out up new sheetrock. It was a big job, but it looks really nice now.
The first two are the wall behind the bed. The last one I tried to get a regular wall (on the left) and a paneled wall (on the right) so you can see the difference.
