How important are the words to you?

How important are the words to you?

So the only job I have given FH is to pick the song we first dance to. I am a music person and am in tune to the words of a song and what they mean.

This weekend he plays for me, Make You Feel My Love, by Adele. The song is great, brings a tear to my eye and ALMOST all the lyrics work. Read them below, the line I'm weary about is 'I know you haven't made your mind up yet'

Am I looking into it too much? I mean, it's not like the song was written for us. Otherwise I love the song, what would you do?

When the rain
Is blowing in your face
And the whole world
Is on your case
I could offer you
A warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows
And the stars appear
And there is no - one there
To dry your tears
I could hold you
For a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you
Haven't made
Your mind up yet
But I would never
Do you wrong
I've known it
From the moment
That we met
No doubt in my mind
Where you belong

I'd go hungry
I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling
Down the avenue
Know there's nothing
That I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging
On the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change
Are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing
Like me yet

I could make you happy
Make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends
Of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love, To make you feel my love

The lyric can mean anything. It doesn't necessarily have to refer to not making his mind up about the relationship.

Btw I think it's really cute that your FH picked that. I like Adele a lot, but my FH wouldn't pick one of her songs in a million years.

I was a bit surprised myself but he downloaded her 2 albums from itunes and picked this one.

I think its amazing that he made a song choice. For me the words were kind of important, but that song sounds lovely. No one is going to notice.

i say go for it - thats a beautiful song - and its only one line of the song - noone will notice.

we're going with bon iver's rosyln, which is probably the most depressing song ever. but its beautiful.

I am very literal, so I am obviously very into words/meaning and I think it is such a beautiful song. I actually considered it as a possibility for our first dance. I think your FH did a great job.

We are considering that same song and I have the same concern. But the rest of the song is so great that I think we may use it anyway. Good Luck!

I listened to the song after reading your post and though it was a great song but the line kind of threw me off a bit, so am with you... you should maybe ask him to choose another one or two more so u guys can have 3 choices

I absolutely love this song but we ultimately decided not to go with it precisely because I did know the lyrics. Sorry to be a downer! To me it almost sounds like someone pleading for another. The video is kind of depressing. They played it at our wedding for a slow dance but it wasn't our first dance song.

I'm with you. It's a beautiful song, but it sounds more like a person who is wanting another person to be with them, not together already.

This song can be interpreted two different ways. I say that if you both love it, go for it. I was going to sing this to FH on our wedding day, however my interpretation was that the two people in the song aren't in the same boat and that one is still trying to get to the other. I still love the song though - so much emotion and Adele does a fabulous job expressing it. Good luck!

This song was originally done by Bob Dylan (it's since been redone by Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, and now Adele). I remember watching an interview with Dylan where he was asked about his music. I found the qupte that I remember most...I hope this helps in your song choice...

This is what Bob Dylan said during a 60 minutes interview:

'They (that is the songs) change their meanings over periods of time. They change their meanings for different situations that a person is in and they hold up because they are so wide, there so many levels in them”.

ETA: When Billy Joel redid it, I fell in love with it and read up about it. I read someplace that this song could be interpreted to be religious...

that was my brother and sister in laws wedding song!! It was beautiful and had everyone teary eyed.... I wouldn't look too much into that one line- the rest of the song works and its a beautiful song!
