Hi all, I just got engaged last weekend! I've been reading through the boards all morning, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, so I have a question: how long after getting engaged did you you actually start planning your wedding? Right now, I'm so happy and excited about being 'just engaged' that I don't think I'm ready to start making plans, financial decisions, etc. I just want to relax and stare at my ring for a while longer! We're planning on getting married in the spring of 2008 - how long in advance do we need to start booking things?

Re: How long did you wait to start planning?
well you can definitely wait a bit and enjoy!
I got engaged christmas eve 2005 and i had my hall booked by jan 16, 2006. I've been engaged about 9 months (wow i cant believe its that long) and i have all my major vendors done and everything else planned out but not done yet
i have the type of personality that if i dont do things right away i worry about it!
sooo work at your own pace, i booked a vendor every few months. . .
good luck, congrats and happy planning!!

First off. . .CONGRATS!
I got engaged on february 10th and we booked our church and hall about two weeks later. That was the thing I really wanted to do because I wanted to set the date.
We haven't booked anything else yet but we are planning on booking the photographer and DJ before the end of the year and everything else in 2007.
Like tilde said though everyone works at their own pace so just enjoy and do it how you want! Just remember a lot of people will give you their opinion without you even asking for it but it's your day and in the end you have to do what makes you happy!
Congrats again and welcome!

First of Congratulations and Welcome to the board.
For me I started Planning my wedding the day after, FMIL was so excited she wanted to know everything so that she can call all her friends. You can start looking now but you don't have to start booking anyone yet.
Good Luck with planning

Take your time! I got engaged in March and I just booked my hall two weeks ago. I don't plan on booking anything else until probably January.
I just wanted to get my hall out of the way (we had a specific date we wanted).
Congrats!!!!!!!!

Re: How long did you wait to start planning?
congrats!!!!
well me, I got engaged may 31st....and i am still staring at my ring and getting used to saying im engaged.
i only booked my church and hall( a month ago monday the 18th) because i wanted to have that set. im torn on whether i will book things now or not. I spend time on here a lot...bc work gets boring.
I have a bunch of ideas.
but take your time and move at your own pace. i want to enjoy the process so i am not trying to get overwhelmed with it as of yet. i think and ask questions but that is all.

Re: How long did you wait to start planning?
Congratulations!!!!
Honestly do it at your own speed. I got engaged Aug 25th...and I know I said that the first week no one was allowed to talk budget. I wanted to enjoy the bliss I was in.
Now I am still in that bliss but I am ready to plan. We are going to the Extravaganza tomorrow, and then we will start calling all the halls and making appointments to see halls and decide on one.
My best friend however was engaged and 3 days later had her hall booked (she hasn't done a thing since then) but everyone has their own speed.
I just recommend booking the major vendors sooner for the purpose of getting prices before they go up. However do what makes you happy!!!

good point! if you book in 2006 most vendors will give you 2006 prices! thats why i want to have all my vendors booked by december!

Re: How long did you wait to start planning?
Thanks for all the advice and the well wishes! It seems like most of you booked a hall pretty quickly - I guess once you decide on a date you want to make sure you can have it. That makes sense. And I liked the advice about trying to do stuff by the end of the year to lock in 2006 prices. Thanks again!
