CLM says its really a time killer depending on how many people you have. Best bet is what a lot of people who just got married and from what some other couples are doing .. do it at the cocktail hour.
The problem with that though is if your doing your pics then....so then its left up to the reception.
I opted for pics before ceremony all done except maybe the aunts and uncles and then attend the majority of the cocktail hour and do our thank u's

We're having an estimated 350 guests so I am not doing that, I will make sure to say hello to everyone and thank them for coming throughout the night

We arent doing it-everyone wants to hug you and tell youhow beautiful you look and how excited they are and how their dog ate their socks....so we are doing it during CH instead

Re: how long do receving lines typically take?
We're having a receiving line after the church AND we're attending our CH... We're still going to visit all the tables at the reception during dinner.
I think my mother would kill us if we didn't, though she admits we don't have to visit as long...
We're having about 140-150. I'm hoping it takes about a half an hour since not everyone will be at the church and we don't have to count the BP or our immediate families in the receiving line... at least, I hope it's just half an hour!

Re: how long do receving lines typically take?
It'll probably take about 25 minutes with that many people. Anything more than 5 minutes is too long IMO. You already know you look beautiful, their cards say congratulations, and anything else they have to say can surely wait an hour or two til the reception.
