How long should it take?

I am nervous because I put a deposit down on a car last week that I ended up not buying. THe guy told me he would give me the deposit back, so I called and he supposedly put the money back on my ATM card (I know, stupid me should have used a check for the deposit, but I didn't have my checkbook on me). It still has not gone back into my account and this was last Tuesday. How long should those things take? I am afraid he screwed me over and I need that money

Don't worry.. if your card has a mastercard or visa logo you can dispute the charges. Let me know if you need more info, Ray used to work in credit card fraud and knows a lot about this

I think it should've gone back to your account within 24 hours.

It usually takes a few days for credits to appear on my bank card. You could call your bank and see if there's a pending credit.

Well I hate to play monday morning quarterback... but this will help anyone who is still thinking about buying a car.

Always make a deposit for a car using a credit card (and NOT one that links to a checking account).

This offers you the best protection because if a deal falls through... you simply dispute the charge and be done with it.


In your case... just dispute it. Your bank should get the money back for you. Good thing you didn't pay via check... thats a bad option.
