How many elementary ed teachers give out 'vacation projects'?
My son has 3 book reports due Monday. 1 for his regular teacher, 1 for the reading specialist who pushes in twice a week to work with him in a group and another for his language specialist. This isn't a vacation anymore
Soooo I guess my question is ...... do most teachers do this and if so, why???????

We didn't give any. The kids were just asked to read over vacation, which I am sure they all did.

I was told to give the kids homework by my chairperson. I told the kids, Yup, you have homework right? Also it's really tough too!
IMO Vacations are family time. With some many working parents and outside commitments the kids can use the time. But at the same time I know my district pushes for homework. I do give my Accelerated children homework over the summer but it honestly should only take them 2 days to do. I do it because the teachers next year have to collect it so I have no choice!

I'm a high school teacher, not an elementary school teacher, and we also give vacation assignments. Sometimes I give a regular homework assignment, and other times I will give a project. It usually depends what the students' other teachers give for vacation homework. I will say that we give assignments so that the students do not forget the school work over the vacation. It's amazing as a teacher to see how much the students forget when they return from vacation. It's almost like we have to start all over again. And as a teacher whose students have a Regents exam in June, I can't afford the time to review.
ETA: Another idea behind giving out vacation homework is to keep the students busy for a portion of the vacation. It will hopefully keep the students off the streets and out of mischief. I have quite a few parents who ask for assignments for their children to do over the vacation. But, as I mentioned before, I teach high school, not elementary school.

as a HS teacher it was my own policy that I would never give HW over vacation...I told them I don't like to do work over the vacation...so when we get back don't ask if anything is corrected and I won't assign HW...
I had the opposite chairperson...easy going and thought HW was a waste since in SS kids just copy directly from the book

I gave a HW math pack, 1 book report, and asked them to read daily. However, I teach 1st grade and the book report isn't a real in depth report

As a reading specialist, I gave an optional packet....(two pages) if they did it, they get a sticker or a prize when they get back...if they don't do it, it will not be held against them at all...

I gave out fun holiday activities (to be done only if they wanted to). Some of my kids took home their journals for fun to tell me about their trip, but it wasnt required. My only requirement was that they read.

In our district you aren't allowed to give homework over the weekend or during vacation. As teachers we usually give an assignment that is due the week they return from a vacation but never the first day back. Usually Wednesday of the week they get back. That's rough to have three book reports due on Monday. Good luck.

I am a 5th grade teacher and we are told to give homework. The district also assigns homework according to grade.

My district gives out holiday helpers to the kids. It is a packet with math and language arts worksheets.
