As we're looking our thoughts on where we want to live and how much we want to spend are changing a bit....
so my question is did you end up spending more or less than you had originally wanted to?

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
We underbid a few thousand from what we were expecting to pay, and got the bid! So we ended up paying less. (BUT- this was back in Feb 2003)

We spent about $20K more then we wanted to but we don't have any renovations to do...Our house is brand new inside & out... So we didn't mind spending the extra money!

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
We started out with a number and soon realized we couldn't get what we wanted for the budget. We re-worked the numbers and ended up spending about $30k more. In the grand picture, it's not that much of a difference in the mortgage payment and boy were we foolish and passed up other properties because of that. I'm glad we finally realized that an extra $100/mo was do-able.
ETA: the whole thing was so scary to us.

well, lets just say we started looking a year and a half ago and we ended up bidding way more then we ever thought we could or would spend.

We spent 30k more than we originally wanted to but the house needs very little work so in the end it worked out.

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
ALMOST DOUBLE
BUT WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT WE COULD AFFORD UNTIL AFTER WE SPOKE TO A MORTGAGE BROKER.
THAT PUT US INTO PERSPECTIVE.
ALSO, I WAS UNAWARE OF THE TYPES OF MORTGAGES THAT ARE OFFERED. WE USED A LOWER INTEREST 5 YRAR FIXED AND LESS MONEY DOWN. THAT HELPED ALOT

We paid more than 50K less than we were willing to pay, but we have already spent 30K and the figure keeps rising

More, but we got alot more for our money being that we were at a stage where our original targer price was limiting us strictly to handyman specials needing $50,000 worth of work, but we paid only $25,000 more for our completed house.

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
We had 2 different spending max's (one before we realized about different mortgage options)
-Our house ended up being 2k more than our initial max and 28k less than our second max.

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
we had a range depending on the house. we wound up paying what we expected but 20K above what i believe the house is 'worth'.

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
We ended up spending more, but we had to...because prices kept climbing from when we originally were figuring on a budget.

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
We spent less than our max by $10k. But it helped that we left LI and went a little north of NYC. I really think, based on what I have seen, that we would have gone over our max by $50k, which would have made things very tight for us right now.

We had an original number in mind and when we saw what that could get us, we increased it. We spent about 130k more than we thought we would have to.

Re: How many houses spinoff sort of...
Instead of a set amout we set a range that we could logically afford and we found one that fit right in there. When I saw the pic online I knew it was the house I wanted!
