How many of us brides will be tipping the 'owners' of the business?

How many of us brides will be tipping the 'owners' of the business?

I am so baffled with this one. I know etiquette says don't feel obligated to tip the owners, such as photographer, dj's, etc. or even make-up artists (especially if they are coming to you the day of) but when I mentioned this to my bridesmaid (who is a make-up artist), she looked at me funny and said, 'Trisha you have to tip them just b/c they own the business doesn't mean anything'.

I am curious to hear what you ladies think. Also, how much do you plan on tipping them?

And, how much do you plan on tipping the limo drivers if you have 2?

If you are getting married in a church, are you going to tip the priest? I know my church charges $300 to use the church. I am so confused.

I am definitely going way over my budget and this is not helping.

TIA...

I have heard that you don't have to tip the 'owner' either. the money you are paying them is going to be kept by them anyway. (for supplies and profit)
I heard the priest you have to tip.
And for limos...the gratuity is usually included. but if the driver is xtra cool, i think they should be tipped a lil extra.
dont know...its what you want to do and what you could afford to do.

For Catholics: NEVER tip a Priest!!!!! That would be an insult to them. They're not vendors, they're your spiritual advisors, and prefer to be considered as family. this is why you traditionally invite them to the reception.
you should get them a gift, not a tip....

As for the others:

I believe hair and make-up are the exceptions to the 'don't tip the owner' rule, since most of them are free-lancers... possibly explaining your friend's opinion and experiences.

Photography owners and limo owners DON'T get tipped. Their workers do.....

I agree with you, even though they say you don't have to, it's not like youre doing anything wrong if you do. So if you want to then go ahead.

Alot of hair and make up artists do free-lance, and they wont own a salon or anything like that so why not give them a little extra if you feel comfortable with that.

Also there are photographers who work for themselves, they also down own a business and don't have others working for them. So if you want to do it again, go ahead, its not like you're doing anything bad to anyone. I do plan on tipping my photographer

As far as photographers/videographers go with tipping, if you book a company like Imagine or Verdi or Wild Rose where the owners are actually shooting your wedding as opposed to a Patken where they have photographers working for them, would you still tip the photographer? Or would you just tip their assistant? What about DOCs? Do you tip them if they own the company?

ETA: Sorry to hijack your post Trish, but thanks for bringing this to light!

Gratuities to vendors should be based on a job well done. Standard 18% to 20%.

IMHO: it should not be based on who the person is to the company (employee or employer.)

For drivers (take the 18-20% of what you paid and divide it by 2) - ie: $800 limo, $160 grat, each driver gets $80 each.

ETA: We gave our priest $200 - and he was more than happy to take it.

It's confusing, but I agree on tipping for a job well done regardless of owner/employee. The whole don't tip the owner mentality has changed so much. For example, the salon biz....most salon owners will gladly take it. My friend is a salon owner in LA and he explained this to me one day. Salons used to be a mom-and-pop business but not so much anymore. Especially with a big salon, there is so much overhead and payout for other employees. It's not like all the profit is going directly into the owners pocket.

I tipped my make up artist for both the trial and the day of. She did amazingly well and I wanted to show my appreciation.

I tipped my celebrant because she was outstanding.

I didn't work with any other owners... but if the work is amazing... I tip!

I tip on a job well done regardless of who the owner is. I think that you should tip based on the service you get.

Exactly, there is nothing wrong with showing someone appreciation for a job well done. My mom owned a salon for YEARS!!!! and EVERYONE tipped her. And just like Magbride said, just because you are the owner doesn't mean you have it easier. You have the rent to pay for, the supplies, salaries, electric bills and so on.
