Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
Even though the real estate market is unbelievable at the moment...LI has so much to offer that other places dont' have.....I was just talking to someone the other day about how much I love it here and how I would never leave! It's strange too, because I used to always think that when I got older and had a family I would move upstate....but no more.....high prices or not

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
leaving NY is the best decision we've made....it took us 2 days to make an offer on a house and be accepted and less than a month to close (hopefully)....
most of the people are moving into subdivisions down here, which we did not. Our land will appreciate greatly considering there is a million dollar home w/ 10 acres across the street and million dollar homes and Lake Lanier within a long walking distance. I'm not sorry nor regretful and my family is not enough to keep me here

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
i posted this question awhile ago. I love long island and hate it at the same time for many reasons. The traffic is ridiculous, the prices for crap are INSANE. But both of us have great tecahing jobs here and there is no otherplace like NY. Ive been to other places and I have to say, nothing beats it IMO.. But on the other hand, it is crazy how we cant afford a house and we make close to $100,000 combined. It is ridiculous.. but i cant see myself anywhere else right now. You got manhattan, the beaches, montauk, the yankees!!!(or mets) broadway plays.. etc. nothing will ever beat that for me. but i wish i could actually afford a house to live here.

If all my family weren't on LI, I'd get out in a heartbeat for that very reason.

No!!!! This question is so funny. I was just debating this with my friend. Yes, you can get lower prices elsewhere but when you own in NY, you own in NY. NY will always be valuable, always be the financial, cultural, wonderful hub of this country. South Carolina will not. Land is plentiful there and not as in demand. While you might get more for your money there in the short term, for a long investment you cant go wrong with buying 30 minutes from the 'pulse of the world'. LI, Westchester, NJ, will always be in demand. Especially in coming years as the places to build in these areas is minimizing. It is supply and demand, my friend! You're living 30 minutes from a city people in Kansas dream about!!! I am not in love with NYC or anything:)
You sound just like my fiance! He things NY is the center of the universe and there is no reason to ever leave. While I do love NY the RE market is crazy. But I would never leave my family.

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
don't get me wrong, I LOVE NY, and LI, and I think that NYers are a unique breed...I may get frustrated with other places where the pace is slower and they don't have as much to offer. BUT the only reason I WOULD leave is due to housing and other costs of living. Our friends just moved to Las Vegas and there are beautiful large houses there on a good amount of land for under $200,000 - houses that would be over one million on LI. It's like a vicious cycle here - you work sooo hard just to make enough to be able to pay to live, and have little money, and little time, left over to really enjoy it.

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
My DH and I left NY...not exactly LI, he grew up in Queens and I in Brooklyn...
IMO, LI is just WAY too crowded and overpriced...yes, it's a hell of a lot closer to the city, where we both work, than where we live now (Bethlehem, PA)...but, when you figure in the fact that we bought a 4 bedroom house on a 1/2 acre of land for half of what it costs in LI...it makes it all worth it...besides, we have some of my family living in Bethlehem, PA as well.
It was a tough decision leaving NY...but I don't regret it. When I have to go to LI and we sit in TRAFFIC everywhere you go...I just sit there and laugh because it's one of the MAIN reasons we just couldn't take being here anymore.

OMG, I would have my apartment packed up in 10 minutes if DH ever said lets move. I would love nothing more than to get off this island, and DH knows it. Unfortunately this is where his business is and our stepson is only 11 yrs. Old. So maybe in about 8 or 9 years we will look into getting out of here. But I doubt it. If I wasn't married to DH right now, I would probably be living in Florida.

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
I grew up on LI, but have lived in Philadelphia for the last 6 or 7 years... FH lived in NYC for 5 years and we both have an elitist perspective of NY and both feel more at home in NY than anywhere else... and we both seriously considered looking to buy a house on LI when I graduated from law school... Unfortunately, I couldn't find a job in NY, so we ended up buying in Philadelphia...but, to be honest, I'm really glad we're in Philadelphia right now... for less than $250k we were able to buy a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath amazing colonial on a quarter acre... we live 15 miles from downtown Philadelphia, which is an adorable city... in an amazingly beautiful and friendly neighborhood... and we aren't so far away from NY... we end up going up for the weekend about once or twice a month (when I'm not studying for the bar, that is)...

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
I lived my whole life on LI when I met DH he was from upstate.
Then we had to decide to we work our buts off and try to afford LI or do we move upstate.
Well we bought 20 acres for only $18,000 upstate and built a huge house!! It all including land cost less then half then it would on LI. Not to mention the view I have here!! The beautiful sunrises and rainbows (I have seen more rainbows in a year here then a lifetime on LI)
Ok I can go on and on...I thought I would never adjust but I love love love it!! Then funny part is my Mom came for a visit and she insisted she would never move....as I right there we are digging a foundation for an apartment for her.

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
I never came back after college and don't regret it for a minute. I lived in Dallas for 4 years and we just moved to Cincinnati, OH. We just bought an awesome colonial-style house for under $175,000, only 10 years old. You couldn't buy a porta-potty for that on LI. I'm gonna have to disagree with those that think LI is the end-all, be all place to live. Recently, coming home to LI I've noticed that it is looking very run down in many areas since everything is just older. Yeah, you have the beach, and the city, but the amount of time I would actually spend there with work and other responsibilites makes me think it is not worth the money to buy the property convenient to all those things. For us, we would rather to live very comforably on my husbands salary, allow me to be a stay at home mom and do nice things and take vacations without having to work and be stressed about mortgage payments and bills. But hey, if you can do it on LI, I think that is great, just not for me. I think it takes a move off of LI to realize there is life out of NY...just and nice and sometimes even better.

Re: How many of us would leave LI if we could?
seeing that I do not live in Li anymore, I can say that if we could afford it, we would live back in LI in a heartbeat....mostly because our family and friends are all out there...where here in RI, we have a few casual friends, and thats about it....
When I graduated HS, i was READY to get out....but once I was away from LI, I realized how much I loved and missed it...and I still love and miss it every day...the ease of driving 10 mins to a beach or an ocean, going on runs to Carvelm for ice cream with friends, the 'house parties', free concerts at the park or whrever where you see veryone you grew up with or who you know....
Living in RI is definitely cheaper, the cost of living is lower, but the salary is also lower....

Of course it would vary based upon the traffic that day...but, on a good day, you could do it in 1 hour 45 min...I know it's a long commute, but it's so worth it when you get home!!!!
