How many rooms should we block?

How many rooms should we block?

FH and I are going to look for hotels to block rooms. Do most hotels limit the number of rooms and if not how many should we reserve? I know for a fact that the guests are more likely to get better rates by themselves either online with AAA discounts or even some of the older guests with AARP discounts. I can't assume that all out of townguests will want to stay in the same place or in the hotel we reserve. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I blocked rooms at the Marriott in Uniondale. They would only allow me to block 10 rooms--over that amount and I had to put it on my credit card. I think several of my guests will get cheaper rates through other sites, but it is nice to reserve a few, particularly if there is no cost to you, for those that don't really care about the $10-20 difference and just don't want the hassle.

We blocked 20 rooms at the marriott in uniondale. We blocked two nights; since the wedding is Sunday afternoon, we blocked Sat and Sun nights.
We didn't have to put anything on a credit card.

You have the option of blocking 10 rooms in two or three hotels.

As far as rates go, I am also a winter bride and I was surprised at how low they dropped the rate for my room block (from $159 to $99/nighta the huntington hilton).

Cool. We are getting married in Oceanside, so we are looking in that area as well as RVC.

I blocked rooms at the Best Western and Hampton Inn in RVC. The BW allowed me to block 20 rooms, and the HI allowed me to block 25. I am under no obligation to fill the rooms or pay anything, and they will hold them until 30 days before the wedding. After that, they go into the regular pool. If I fill the block, they will give any more people the block rate.

I talked to Rita at the BW and I think Audrey at the HI. Bw dropped the rate by 20 bucks or so off their winter rate (my wedding is in Jan.) and the HI dropped 50 bucks.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the info. We will for sure go to those places first. I would like for my out of town guests to be as close to the Temple as possible in the event of a snowstorm so they can be safe and get there!!! This helps a lot!!!

We were only able to block 10 rooms, but everytime 5 rooms would get blocked, they would hold another 10.

One of my closest friends from college is a meteorologist on Channel 2. I'll see if she can hook me up with some information!!!! Can we say 'wedding insurance?'

Cold doesn't bother me one bit. I grew up with central air set at 65 year round. Mom STILL keeps her house that way though I don't live there. I went to college in Syracuse and to be honest I can only breathe freely when it is cold. I should move to the Swiss Alps! I just don't want it to be unsafe for my guests and vendors. Snow is fine as long as it is on the ground already.

We blocked 20 but I know we won't need nearly that many. They have until a month prior and then they open up the rest of the untaken rooms to the public.

Cold doesn't bother me either, but FH and I live in Seattle - I don't want to be snowed out of my own wedding! (we'll be flying to NY EARLY!!!!). My biggest fear is that the OOTers could have trouble getting in. My dad and brother are both firemen, so anyone who makes it into town can get to the hall on the firetruck if necessary!
