Re: how many songs do you pick
I made a do not play list that had about 15 songs on it - and my play list was even shorter. If you have a good dj he will be able to feel the crowd and determine what you like & don't like from very short lists for both.
Good Luck!

FH and I are total music snobs and we're planning the entire 5 hours ourselves. It's still a year and a half away, and maybe we're being unrealistic about it, but for now it seems like kind of a fun project.

Re: how many songs do you pick
i put about 10 songs that i definitely wanted to be played...I didn't really give 'specifics' as to what not to play, but did tell the DJ - no group dancing songs, no requests from the guests, and no slow dance music. Vinny did exactly what I asked, and that's what makes him PERFECT!

Re: how many songs do you pick
we actually sat down with our DJ about a week or two before the wedding and told him what kind of music we liked and what we wanted played. Like I wanted 80's Heavy Metal played during dinner. He played it slower and me and my friends were still able to enjoy it. And then he played it again at the end of the night when everyone was leaving. Otherwise he played music you would hear at a wedding and typical dance music that is hot now. We had a great time and everyone was happy.

Re: how many songs do you pick
HAHAH its nice to see me and FH are not alone in this. We went to one dj and told him if he doesn't play songs on our play list or plays songs on the do not play list we might hurt him IoI we laughed about it but were completely honest about it. Fh and I and all of our families hate rap and dance music. We can deal with R&B but would rather not have it played. So the dj said supply me a list and burn the songs I do not have and give it to him. No probs, if no one is dancing he says he wanted permission to take control of the music and see if he can get people of the floor what he thinks would be good without dipping into our do not play list.
Fh and all of his family were in rock, death metal, thrash metal, hardcore bands and i come from a death metal / doom metal background. We understand all of our guests do not want to hear this so we came up with a play list. Every song we liked to be played and all songs or types of music we do not want to be played. I plan to work on making cds of the songs for the times of each part of the wedding (except ceremony).
Cocktail hour is one hour (plus 20 min extra music to cover any extra time left) mixed of irish traditional, irish punk/folk, some instrmental metal songs that are not over the top (fh's request), contemp songs that are not too heavy and can be easily talked over.
Reception (i think is 4 hours) we will have a nice mix of 80's nu-wave that fh and i can agree on, rock, 50/60's music and at the end a Gwar song (omage to our early years of being at the roxy in huntington i was 14 he was 22) that we both like and a Pyrexia or Internal bleeding death metal song.
Good luck.. work on your list though and make sure DJ has it the list and understands that HE MUST do what the lists say.

Same - we programmed every song ourselves with cross fades - it was a lot of work. We KNEW that it meant people might not dance because it's OUR music (and pretty mellow) so we had a casino for entertainment - that way our guests were happy and we were happy!
If you want to play all your music just be realistic about it, your guests may not like it and may not want to dance, I was OK with that, I didn’t care if people didn’t dance because that’s why I got the casino! I was pleasantly surprised that we received so many compliments on the music, because it was mellow background music so people could talk BUT I think people would have been really bored if we didn't have the casino.
Also, it depends on your guests, if all of your friends are into the same music as you then you should play more of their music like Jennifer said – her guests all like hardcore and hate rap, so obviously play what your guests will like more.
