I think the rule of thumb is assume 10-20% no shows, which would put you at 154 - 168 invites, but I'm not 100% this is the best guideline, just what I've read.

I want between 220 and 240. We invited 258. So far we have 76 yes and 9 no (my response date isn't until 5/27).

I think 'they' say 10-15% is average, we had 25% say no.

The problem with doing it this way, is you just never know. Some people may completely surprise you by attending when you thought they would not. You have to be careful or meeting minimums and not having too many people in the room.

It will depend on the number of out of town guests and courtesy invites you are sending. The more of these, the higher your rate of declines will be.

Christine is definitely right. it totally depends on the make up of your invite list. we are from DC and we had the wedding in LI (duh, of course, that is why I am on LIW ). anyway, i invited everyone from work (partially because i knew many would not end up coming and i wanted to be inclusive). Well, No ONE from work made the trip up. so we had 40 NOs right there. All total, we had 50% NOs. 99% of the people from Long Island came, and the rest only about 60% of the out of towners came. i think people were traveling a little bit less during the war?!

good luck.
