I am trying to figure out if the prices I was quoted by two different bakeries are good
Could you please let me know how much you paid for your cake?
How many people did it feed?
How many tiers?
Fondant of buttercream?
and finally....who did you ordered from?

My cake was 4 tier, hexagon shape fondant that fed 125 people and i paid $575. The hexagon shape was more $$. HTH!!

MIne is included in the RH package, but we are paying $150 more for ours since the one we chose is an upgrade...it has four tiers and has fondant over buttercream icing, candy seashells etc. (some people don't like fondant, so that's why the buttercream underneath.). Sorry not much help...

That is not terrible, but I think it is ridiculous to have to charge you more b/c of the shape lol
I would say if you are looking to price a cake, you want to keep in mind that the 'going' price is normally $4.50 a slice. The more ornate and the more detail put into the cake the more it will be. Some people seriously take advantage of brides and weddings and charge too much money. I would keep in mind that most people charge more for a fondant cake than a buttercream b/c the fondant can be harder to work with. Especially if you want a certain design on it.
IMHO, I think simple is more elegant than things hanging off of the cake and designs all over. Just my thing though. :) Good Luck.

Since I used the bakery my RH uses, to upgrade it was only about $300 more. It fed 150 people. It was 4 tiers but the top tier was saved for us to have on our anniversary...what we did to save money is they made a sheet cake they kept in the kitchen, so they'd have enough for everyone without having to make the cake bigger and more expensive.
It was fondant with some dots & floral accents. I ordered it from La Bonne Boulangerie in Port Jefferson. I highly recommend them, they're cakes are awesome. They make it fresh that morning. Here's a pic of mine:
