How expensive is it to have a baby? Does this sound right? My dr doesn't take insurance, so soup to nuts his fee is $8,000. We will get back 80% of that when we bill insurance on our own, and maybe secondary will cover a little more, but wow! Does that number sound right to you?

That's odd that you have a doc that doesn't take insurance, not worth it to me but yes that's probably about right. You also have to consider the hospital bill unless your insurance covers that. The cost of having a baby can be anywhere from 5-20,000 if there are no complications.

Does the 8000 include the prenatal visits? I hope so because honestly, you can end up going once a month in the beginning, then every two weeks and then every week. Not to mention the urine sample tests they do every visit and stuff like that.
I know it typically costs around 10K to have a baby at the hospital with a v-birth and no complications.

We're at about $4000 with all the visits, tests, etc. but we're covered 90%. We had alot of tests due to complications.

I would find a new OB. Here is why: yes it all sounds doable now, but 1 complication and you can owe tens of thousands. There is NO way to predict what can happen. I needed a c/s...that cost over $10K alone. And GOD FORBID you have a serious problem. My entire pregnancy would have cost upwards of $30K because of my gestational diabeties. You could be putting your future financial stablility at risk for you, DH and your new baby. Unless you have some serious medical condition that this OB specializes in I would find a new one.

Find another doctor that takes your insurance there is no need to have to pay that amount out of pocket. You never know what can go wrong and the total he gave you might go up if there are any complications. Best of luck.

I have never heard of an OB that doesn't take insurance. I would get another doc.

Re: How much does it cost to have a baby?
Now this is for the cost of just having the baby, not the normal office visits. I don't know what those costs would of been w/out insurance.
To have Caiden with insurance cost us $250.00 just for the copayment. Now, if we didn't have ins. for a vaginal delivery would of cost $3,000 and a C-section would of been $3,500. All of my normal office visits were covered 100%, and my well-baby visits are covered 100% up until they're 2 yrs old.
I definitely would find a doctor that takes the insurance. I agree w/Michele31. Don't take a chance with that kind of money. You'll need that money for later... trust me!

I have insurance. With it, it cost me $10 to have Andrew. That's it - the first copay and then nothing. Not one cent. I went for doc visits every month, to a Level II sono, had all my tests and bloodwork done, etc and had a c-section at the end of it all. IMO, I'd find a doctor that accepts your insurance.

Re: How much does it cost to have a baby?
Total Cost that the insurance paid was about $100,000. Our co-pay was about $875.00. It would have been $400.00 less if I was not put on bed rest in the hospital and release after 4 weeks then ended up getting admitted again during my scheduled visit for sonogram, a week after, on my 34th week, was induced due to my very high BP).
I've never heard of an OB that does not accept insurance but i do know of a Pediatrician in Manhattan.

Re: How much does it cost to have a baby?
My OB's fee for a vaginal birth would be $4,500 and add $5,500 to that for a c-section. I had to sign off on it at my first visit even though insurance covered it all.
I saw the totals submitted to GHI for my c-section though and it was upwards of $45,000. and insurance covered that as well, or should I say whatever their 'allowable' charges are to the doctors. I guess this includes anesthesiologist, O/R, nursery and any other hospital stay fees etc... which are not included in the initial dr's fee but I have not been billed for a thing. I only paid my office co-pay of $20.00 at the first visit.
In fact, now that I think of it I am supposed to pay $200 co-pay for hospital admissions and they never charged me for that either.
