How much are you paying?

I think it depends upon what you are getting, for instance I got all letterpress: invites, direction cards, RSVP cards and envelopes and my outter envelope was lined with paper.
(So three envelopes and two had return addresses in letterpress).

One could also have gotten colorful ink or gold ink.

Or if you go the DIY rout it will be less $ but a lot of time.

ETA: It also depends upon how many invites the person ordered as well. The cost for 100 invites is different than for 200 invites.

We paid $392 for 175 invites with the works. With calligraphy, its coming to $500 for 175. Not to shabby. Our goal was that.

The invites that I like will be about $550 for 125 invitations with burgundy lined inner envelopes, burgundy ink, and the RSVP card. The are pricey but they have a vellum overlay with a chiffon ribbon and are sooooo pretty. I am going to do the calligraphy myself on my computer to save that cost.

Well how many invites will you need?

I made my own programs and got personalized napkins off of ebay.

There is a lot of stuff you can get:
invite
reception card
rsvp
reply envelope
direction card
escort card or place card (i used plain printer paper and stuck it into a frame. the frame was $1.00 per couple and it doubled as my favor)
menu (made my own)
program (made my own)
hotel card (free from hotel)
and i am sure a lot of other stuff.

You can get simple invites with flat printing or thermography with black ink for under $500. It is the colored ink, ribbons, embelishments, multiple layers of paper, types of paper, engraving, letterpress, boxes, cords, etc. that all increase the price.

I think mine were $180 for 125 invitations with all the assorted stuff that goes with it. (ie:, response cards, reception cards, etc)

$250 for 100 invites with all the trimmings (response cards, lined envelopes, etc.)
