Honestly, if I were you I would try to get a close friend or family member to help you with the planning aspects. Maybe you know someone who has recently gotten married that can offer their help and advice. I've been talking with a lot of friends who are recent brides and they are usually a wealth of info since they themselves have been through this whole process. If your gonna spend the money, I'd save it for a DOC b/c that is when you want to be the most stress free.
I dont know how much either costs tho. One of my GM's mother is a wedding consultant and DOC and she offered to help me out with anything I need free of charge. But she and her husband are going to be guests at our wedding so she would be there they day of regardless.

Re: How much for wedding consultant and do you recommend them?
we have a DOC-- and we considered booking her for a partial pkg but we've already booked sooooo many things ourselves that we didnt think it was worth it. Sometimes I wish we did it becuase I think she'd keep us on track- and I consider upgrading but I just dont know. THe nice thing is that the DOC reccomends vendors and I always mention that we're using her (Francesca from Dazzling Affairs) I feel like they will be less likely to try and screw us becuase if they do she wont reccomend them anymore!!
I think that day of and the month or so before (we'll have a few meetings) that she will be priceless esp since we're working until the day before the wedding so that we can take the full 2 wks for our HM. I can email her as much as I want and call her as much as I want- as can my mom and my FMIL-- which is nice. I do feel that she has 'more important' clients-- which is true as they're paying thousands-- but overall I'm happy.
I want my mom and BMs to enjoy the day and the weeks leading up, not worry about helong me verify times etc with vendors which is why I went with a DOC. I should also mention that at the time she told us that if we went with her for the partial pkg that she would save us the price that we paid in vendors-- if we hadnt booked so many already i would have 100% gone for it.
Good luck- FM me with questions.
ETA: the DOC pks is $1000ish-- from what I remember the full (she does EVERYTHING with you is like $4-5k ish and the partial is like $2500 ish) Don't quote me!

I have an excellent coordinator but she is down here in Maryland. Her fee was 3,000 for full service, which includes all that you can think of. And since we have a long engagement its a deal, she is will be with us from beginning to end. She has already flown to New York with us for the tasting, to meet with photographers, and was with me when I chose my dress. She knows our wedding inside out.

I met with one and she was wonderful. I ended up not booking her because my FH didnt want me to have outside help.. hes weird like that. Full package deal (from start to finish) she was 50% off if you mention brides.com FM me if you want her info.
whoops forgot the price. I was quoted $1300 w/ the 50% off
